Yeah thats what i tried as well.

When you say 10mm do you mean 13mm? On the mechanism thats on the gear shaft?

I think he's refering to the m6 or m8 bolt that attatches the rod from the mechanism below the gear stick to the shaft come out of the box I'm assuming this is where you seperated it not at the mechanism below the grarstick ??

Well its booked in to go to (dare i say) vw. There's not many places i can take it thats not too far away and im fed up with it. If this doesn't get sorted im thinking down the line of selling/breaking. Maybe im just getting too frustrated!!!!

you're going to break a car because the gear linkage isn't lined up right?!? It just needs more time, there's no secret magic it's just trial and error till you get it right.  Unless the linkage is simply bent and in that case it shouldnt cost much to get hold of a 2nd hand mk3 polo gear linkage, or just straighten out the bent bits.

sign up on the vag-cat forums mate, its an online etka and your find a picture of the entire linkage.

that is jsut the finger that fits on the end of the selector shaft that comes out of the gearbox. the linkage from the gearstick connects via a splined rod that fits into a cage, the cage fits over the shift finger.

the diagram should explain it, if you were closer, id set it up for you, its easier with 2 people.

i find it best to push the selector shaft all the way in, get a mate to hold the gearstick in 3rd and bosh it in the splined rod and tighten, test all gears, forward and back movement should be fine, but its the side to side movement (to engage reverse/1st and 5th) that can be adjusted by turning the splined shift rod, in the cage.

dont break it for something simple

I know what bit you mean. Already on vagcat.

Just trying to get reverse is the only problem.

can you get it into reverse easily with the linkage disconnected? is the gearstick able to move over to left enough when you push it down, to clear the tab that stops you selecting reverse inadvertantly

When disconnected and by hand its easy and when the gear lever is pushed down it goes over properly. I have to push down at the mo to get it into 1st as its not setup correctly underneath. Its not been driven like that until i take to garage tomorrow.

from what i have found, there are 2 variables.

the actual 10mm locator on the rod, and the 13mm bracket securing part

both these need to be fiddled to get it right, its a pain but you need to do them both not just one!
