Word of warning
« on: October 17, 2010, 08:57:51 pm »
Evening Gents,

Just a little heads up of a little known problem that can turn into a royal pain in the arse!

Behind the driver's side rear doorcard is a metal pipe- the fuel filler neck breather runs along this and to the lift pump.

Unfortunately when this rusts, it drops onto the inner sill, you can squeeze your hand down and pick up the rusted chunks of pipe.

I'd have a check asap, as mine had made the inner sill start to rust, as such I've now got to cut the whole area out and plate it.

Hopefully you can catch it in time!

Pete

Yup ! Same on mine ! The metal tube has just about gone. Using one of those telescopic magnet tools can also help getting the little bits out.

Regards Rob  ;)

What is the best action to take if the metal pipe has started to rust but not completely shafted yet?

James- I'd try to remove any fallen rusty debris, and then use a rust eater on it.

The pipe inside is a plastic vent line, so won't be affected by the rusty outer pipe.

Mine was so crusty I just pulled it out  :o But you'd not be able to cut it out easily...

So is it the rust debris that encourages the rust in the inner wing, or is it that it allows water to get caught in there?

Majority of my metal pipe is awol, lol. had to replace the (bodged) breather pipe not long ago and noticed it wasnt there! someone must have removed it when they lashed it up the last time. Ill have to fish the crusty bits out with a magnet then!

Encourages it, I don't see the point of the metal pipe- my guess is to pass crash regs...

kayl0rz- Sorry, Gents and kayl0rz  :D
