best place for coolant?
« on: October 23, 2010, 08:08:53 pm »
came to use my polo for the first time in about two months today to find it had no coolant in it.  Traced the issue to a fatigued water pipe going to the turbo (I suspect the extreme heat has caused it to fail so I'll need to get something that can cope with heat more but that's another story...).

Where's the best place for coolant at the moment?  It's just got water in it now which is no good.  Anyone know any tricks fo getting coolant cheap (not fussed if it's VW or some other make as long as it's decent).  I'm sure I seem to recall someone saying it' cheaper from vauxhall dealers?

I used the halfords advanced coolant and it seems very good.

I also once used water wetter but i dont think it was that great to be honest.

yeah not fussed about any of that, just normal 50:50 mix of water and coolant additive is fine.  Looks like GSF a 5l tub for about £14+VAT which is OK, will get a bit off with 10% discount too.  Do you know howmuch the halfords one is?  I always think of them as expensive so never go there really.

coolant return pipe from the turbo, it's leaking where it pushes onto the barb n the banjo bolt fitting.  It's very close to the turbine housing.  It's lasted a couple of years to be fair and it's only bog standard coolant pipe from a motor factors.

Ah cool, sounds like the pipes I have will be ok for a little while at least. Cheers for the info  ;)
For a reference the last bottle of G12 I bought from the dealer was 1.5L for £7.
