Hi People,

Need a bit of help/advice.

I've just refitted my newly serviced/rebuilt charger and it making a strange rattly grinding noise.  This surely can't be normal or is it just running in?  No noises like this before the rebuild so I'm pretty sure it the charger.

Thanks in advance
Jason

A place called Volksfield Engineering

g40chris

i would ring them and ask for their advice if i was you before it causes any damage.

Robin

out of interest how much did they charge you for the lader service?

what did they change on it?

dubface

I've already had to send it back once for the same reason. Said they couldn't see anything wrong with it but suspected a bearing??  It definatly sounds like something is loose inside as its not a constant noise- more of a rattle if that makes sense.

They have told me all seals and bearings have been changed including the apex seals and internal belt.  It cost me £320 plus postage x2  ::)

Starting to wish I had sent it to g-werks now.

Thanks for the replies

Robin

sounds odd, does it rattle if you shake it about?

do these peopel actually know what they are doing as not many places know what a lader is nevermind how to service it!

SuperMario

Im currently running my charger in, no strange noises, it purrrrs

dubface

Thanks, that makes me feel better! :'(

I think they know about them because they were selling rebuilt kits/seals on ebay which is where I first heard of them.  Say they have done dozens of rebuilds before, but i guess you never know do you.

some bearings are noisier than others, but grinding is bad...

any mechaniclly minded person can do a basic overhaul to a g40 charger with the right tools.( press, bearing and seal pullers and some loctite and lube). it might be the keys or keyways worn on the shaft or the the cam parts that go over the shaft. everything should be a tight fit.
When i did mine about a year ago one of my keys were worn.

i'd advise against using a bearing press if you can help it.

Some of the countershaft bearings i've seen are notchy

grayg40

i didnt find a problem using the press, just ure some vasoline when inserting them.
its probably easy for me as i press bearings into things as part of my job which some are smaller than the ones in a charger. taking your time is the thing

PeteG40

ah - just jabba/g-werks and me always use a heated casing and they just drop in. PLOP

So what do you advise then, sending it back to him again or opening it up to have a look inside considering he's already had it back once for the same reason.

Turning the charger manually - it feels fine, nice and tight and smooth.
