G40 Cup Sprint/Hillclimb Car
« on: December 08, 2016, 09:04:04 am »
Thought I should start a thread on my car.

The car is a well known original G40 Cup Race car from 1991.......it was converted in 2006/7 into a road legal Hill climb car (although it has never actually been on the road) and ran successfully in MSA Class 1b road modified under the peddling of Richard Vale winning a few Championships, having Class Course records and hundreds of class wins/podiums and even a 7 page write up in VW performance in July 2012. End of season 2012 it was sold to another Hill climb competitor Will Roberts with mixed results. Richard bought the car back in 2015 and has done only a handful of events since with a couple of podiums.

I have purchased it November 2016 to continue its progress in 2017 but changing class to MSA 3c Modified Production. Basically the car will return to its original stripped spec that it ran in the G40 cup.

I will update the journey with many photos (once I get photo bucket running again) so hope you enjoy  ;D

Started to make the car my own as a few things need doing prior to Race season 2017.

Bonnet Repainted

Spare wheels purchased

Dry and wet tyres purchased

Plumbed in Fire exstinguisher purchased

Race Livery done

Full Corner weighting and Geometry set up by Chevron Motorsport

Dyno run to make sure all sweet for 2017, made 177.2bhp at 10psi boost but running a bit rich at air fuel ratio of 10;1 at wide open throttle so room for improvement.

Ordered a CAE Ultra Short shifter which should be here next week...........will be fitted in the new year, a few small jobs after that then time for some testing and seat time.

The Class is 1400-2000cc but mainly hot hatches........R5 GTT, Pug 205, Golfs, 106's, Intergra's. Type R's etc. All running much more power and prob a bit lighter. My car is not a full Mod Prod car yet as still retains glass windows, metal doors and hatch along with not running full slicks like most of the others in my class.
the Class usually is made up of between 8-25 cars so very competitive.

1st event is Anglesey sat 1st and Sunday 2nd April but will be testing at oulton park in Feb if anyone wants to come for a watch.

Ian, regarding the arches, is this a complete set of G60 arches and trim pieces ? Or only G60 arches with G40 trim pieces?
It looks so good, wished they looked like that from factory

Many thanks for the comment, the arches are G60 and cut around the G40 trim pieces. Currently working on new arches for the front similar to Berg Cup as I need more track width. I should do an update on progress with the car as a few more things have been done

Are you allowed to run a subframe and retain the original ARB pickup points?

Yes I am in Mod prod........roadgoing classes no..............it is something I'm tempted at changing but not sure how much benefit I would get on the Hillclimbs and Sprints as some flex is required lol

Update:

Iv had the CAE Ultra shifter fitted and removed the front and rear arches. The new front arches are modified from Golf berg cup, pic below shows test fit not finished fit. Front wings along with front and G60 rear arches have gone away to paint (white) and will be picking them up tomorrow.

Picked up the front wings along with the arches from the painters yesterday, just need a couple of decent weather days to get the car finished and ready for 1st test day on 12th Feb at Anglesey Circuit.
