Title: G40 Cup Sprint/Hillclimb Car
Post by: Ian Johnson on December 08, 2016, 09:04:04 am
Thought I should start a thread on my car.

The car is a well known original G40 Cup Race car from 1991.......it was converted in 2006/7 into a road legal Hill climb car (although it has never actually been on the road) and ran successfully in MSA Class 1b road modified under the peddling of Richard Vale winning a few Championships, having Class Course records and hundreds of class wins/podiums and even a 7 page write up in VW performance in July 2012. End of season 2012 it was sold to another Hill climb competitor Will Roberts with mixed results. Richard bought the car back in 2015 and has done only a handful of events since with a couple of podiums.

I have purchased it November 2016 to continue its progress in 2017 but changing class to MSA 3c Modified Production. Basically the car will return to its original stripped spec that it ran in the G40 cup.

I will update the journey with many photos (once I get photo bucket running again) so hope you enjoy  ;D

Full Corner weighting and Geometry set up by Chevron Motorsport

Dyno run to make sure all sweet for 2017, made 177.2bhp at 10psi boost but running a bit rich at air fuel ratio of 10;1 at wide open throttle so room for improvement.

What a beast! really interesting running/chassis gear too + great job on the livery  8)

What other sort of cars will you race against in your class?
Title: Re: G40 Cup Sprint/Hillclimb Car
Post by: Ian Johnson on December 17, 2016, 09:30:23 am
The Class is 1400-2000cc but mainly hot hatches........R5 GTT, Pug 205, Golfs, 106's, Intergra's. Type R's etc. All running much more power and prob a bit lighter. My car is not a full Mod Prod car yet as still retains glass windows, metal doors and hatch along with not running full slicks like most of the others in my class.
the Class usually is made up of between 8-25 cars so very competitive.

1st event is Anglesey sat 1st and Sunday 2nd April but will be testing at oulton park in Feb if anyone wants to come for a watch.

Ian, regarding the arches, is this a complete set of G60 arches and trim pieces ? Or only G60 arches with G40 trim pieces?
It looks so good, wished they looked like that from factory

Post by: Ian Johnson on January 26, 2017, 06:30:44 am
Many thanks for the comment, the arches are G60 and cut around the G40 trim pieces. Currently working on new arches for the front similar to Berg Cup as I need more track width. I should do an update on progress with the car as a few more things have been done

Yes I am in Mod prod........roadgoing classes no..............it is something I'm tempted at changing but not sure how much benefit I would get on the Hillclimbs and Sprints as some flex is required lol

Update:

Iv had the CAE Ultra shifter fitted and removed the front and rear arches. The new front arches are modified from Golf berg cup, pic below shows test fit not finished fit. Front wings along with front and G60 rear arches have gone away to paint (white) and will be picking them up tomorrow.

Change to my Race Calendar for 2017 as I have switched from the MSA speed championships to the Javelin Sprint series as it fits in much better with what I have going on. The Championship consists of 8 rounds and I will be running in class A3 which is Race Modified production cars up to 2000cc with the forced induction calculator.

Will be a bit of a learning curve circuit wise as I have only ever been to Anglesey Circuit out of the 8 venues. Maybe if your not busy on any of the below dates then pop along and have a watch/chat.

 Round 1
 Snetterton 300
 26th March

 Round 2
 Blyton Park (Outer)
 16th April

 Round 3
 Kendrew Barracks
 21st May

 Round 4
 Croft
 25th June

 Round 5
 Blyton Park (Eastern)*
 23rd July

 Round 6
 Anglesey
 19th August

 Round 7
 Woodbridge*
 10th September

 Round 8
 Cadwell Park*
 22nd October

1st Test day yesterday at Anglesey Coastal Circuit, the G40 was much quicker than I expected. no issues all day and was lapping in the 1:22 bracket which on a very cold windy day for me was excellent.

Next test day is oulton park on the 24th Feb if anyone wants to see a G40 on track :)

Great to see this still about and being put to good use.  Last I saw it had just been sold as a shell to a lad in Nottingham (probably Richard I'd guess then).  I was gutted as I would have bought it as it was a very short notice sale, I remember turning up at Johns with it just being trailered away.    I used to pitcrew for Andy B for the VW Cup and TRC SE.   Andy B moved onto to building a Corrado 2.0T full on race car to compete against Rod Birley in the TRC but as far as I'm aware the project got shelved.  Peter Studer created that suspension, via his work at Multimatics, it was honed to perfection! His experience and speed took that car to numerous still unbroken lap records!!

I thought Andy sold it with the modified Track Control Arms/subframe made by John and the Lloyd Allard made intercooler, they must have been removed I take it?

Any more info on the brake setup?

Also that's a pretty impressive power figure, what's the specs on the engine?

Great work, nice to see a cup car getting some use. Will try and get over to Snett on the 26th as its local for me; would be good to see a G pacing round with some bigger cars.

2nd Test at Oulton park on the 24th Feb went pretty well doing best laps of 2:09 which in damp/wet I was pretty happy with considering I was on semi slicks. the day was cut short again at 2pm due to increasingly bad brake judder.

(http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg44/Redscooby_photos/vw%20polo%20g40/XSP_4790.jpg) (http://s245.photobucket.com/user/Redscooby_photos/media/vw%20polo%20g40/XSP_4790.jpg.html)

few laps at Oulton not the best as brake judder was pretty bad and conscious thoughts of ball joint failure lol

(http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg44/Redscooby_photos/th_Oulton%20Park%2024.02.17%20pm.mp4) (http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg44/Redscooby_photos/Oulton%20Park%2024.02.17%20pm.mp4)

On inspection yesterday I found the inner front pads had worn over the lower edge/casting of the custom discs/bells. Willwoods weren't designed for my car and pad shape is not quite right and as it has worn it was rubbing on the rough casting of the brake disc. i'v now cut the pads down so hopefully that issue is solved. Also found the supercharger toothed pully stretched.......new one brought from Pete and fitted, sounds awesome and whinny again now lol.

Could there possibly be a case of mistaken identity in the history of your car Ian? I've recently been chatting with the owner of the no40 car and its parked in the corner of his workshop in bits!

I can only go on the history given to me......anythings possible either way it's only ever been a race car since 1991, registered as a road car in 2006 to comply with msa road going production class rules but never been in the road. Shame there isn't a register with chassis numbers anywhere.

Managed to get a look up Snett on Sunday; used a trip to Snetterton dump as an excuse to the wife. Unfortunately couldn't stick around for long as we had company for lunch. There were quite a few tasty looking (& sounding) motors knocking about  8)

G sounded good, how did you get on?

Shame I missed you, Snetterton 300 was a good test and did decent times managed a 2:20.46 but struggled with horrendous brake judder which I have traced to a faulty AP rotor which cost me a lot of time and confidence in braking as pad knock pushed the caliper pistons back meaning I had to pump the pedal before braking hard. Also was 15mph down on top speed of the other class cars 105mph for me 120mph, needed more power to pull 5th gear even with running a 4:44 diff.
I was 2 seconds off the pace but finished 4th in the Highly Modified under 2000cc class. The next round at Blyton on 16th April will suit the G40 better as not dependant on top speed, also I have new rotors being made and new DS3000 pads on order. Hopefully will have my pedal box installed aswell for then.
Hoping to have fiberglass hatch and polycarb windows also fitted for round 3 on 21st May.

little action shot from Snetterton lol

Managed to get the brake bias pedal box in still retained OEM cable clutch but had to use a mk2 golf throttle cable as OEM is far too short. Custom discs 300mm x 22mm 12 bolt also fitted along with DS 3000 pads.
Exhaust manifold also machined as warped after Snetterton again.

Update: Uprated O/S Driveshaft needed urgently if anyone has one?

Round 2 of the JSS ended early again..............snapped O/S driveshaft on 1st timed run. On a positive note the Bias pedal box and brakes worked for the limited amount of braking done lol

(http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg44/Redscooby_photos/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-04/IMG_20170416_110605.jpg) (http://s245.photobucket.com/user/Redscooby_photos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-04/IMG_20170416_110605.jpg.html)

My GRP Hatch turned up on Saturday so just waiting for the Polycarb windows and can then shed some weight before Round 3 on 21st May......be glad when I can just get in and drive without having to fix/modify.

Made a start on removing some more of the "road going"  parts that had been added. All glass removed, door cards and added window winders etc. Rear hatch removed and pins installed for the GRP hatch. GRP hatch is only a single skin so added Ali strips to top and bottom for mounting. Will cut out the window aperture once the polycarb windows arrive.

Are your rear arches standard? I need to get some for my conversion and can't decide whether to try generic ones or spend more time / money and get a std G40/GT? kit.

4th ain't too shabby for >2000cc. Nice going!

Gutted about the driveshaft! I guess that's motorsport.. pushing components to the limit!

I'd be interested in the weight saving of the glass; if you're able to get a rough idea?

There was someone on here (and PSD) who I seem to remember did a very detailed list of weight of the panels and glass vs plastic versions. Mark Hunter I think? I forget his username but pretty sure he listed the weights, etc. Sure yoof or someone would know too.

Yes not too bad considering the power differences, most others are around 240bhp, my 177bhp is ok so I'm trying to get the car to around 700kg to get a better power/weight

Gutted about the driveshaft! I guess that's motorsport.. pushing components to the limit!

Yes but was shocked tbh, the bang made me jump lol.......im still blaming myself for being too aggressive, I pushed too hard not knowing the circuit and knowing rain was due at 12:00 so would only have 2 dry runs. All but 1 of my competitors were there the day before on a trackday or were familiar with the circuit. i'm usually pretty smooth........lesson learnt.

I'd be interested in the weight saving of the glass; if you're able to get a rough idea?

the rear hatch and window is the most weight, once my Plastics 4 performance windows turn up I will weigh them, rear window is bonded to hatch so that weight will be together. My GRP hatch without poly window is 4kg

Will weigh standard stuff poss tom

weighed the rear hatch along with all glass.........came to 28.5kg, so a weight saving of 13kgs. Not weighed the door cards, door mirrors, window mechanism and internal door skins but expect close to a total weight of 7kgs giving me 20kg.

Fitted the polycarb windows today:

After some more research and discussions with 'Classic VW Cup' members/drivers it looks like my car is EX Barwell Motorsports Car 4: Marc Lemmer race car and not previously thought Peter Studer car 40.

A few small jobs done before round 3 of JSS this weekend:

Driveshaft with new cv's fitted
Front brake pads cut down as they were rubbing on the custom bells
Ride height reset
Brake Bias box foot plate made
Vent holes cut into front and rear bumpers
Side skirts removed
Side decals removed as printed ink was coming off everytime I cleaned the car

Hoping that Round 3 will go with no issues as I'm due some luck after issues at both previous rounds
