Belt left on the mway at 80
« on: January 11, 2009, 01:01:57 pm »
well i no longer have a toothed drive belt as it left me on the motorway friday night at 11pm  >:( got recovered eventually after nearly freezing to death.
The car had been sounding rough on idle for a few days and stupidly i wanted to wait till the weekend to investigate, should have retired the car but just needed to get places. It went silent after 1.5k and i dismissed the belt being the issue.
Looking at the pulleys now they looked like they have been abbraised as they are quite shinney in places, so i dont know whether a stone or something had got caught it the belt? sounds silly.
So im going to be ordering a new one, would this be corerect?
http://www.jabbasport.com/store/index.php?app=gbu0&ns=prodshow&ref=G-LADER04

How much play should be left in the belt once fitted?

sorry for the Q's but im new to all this

thanks for any help,
John

If i'm not mistaken, thats the charger timing belt on Jabba site. If that went on yours, the charger would have grenaded!

I guess you mean toothed pulley belt?

how worn are your toothed pullies?  Have you been using the proper belt on them or just a timing belt?    That one we sell is a proper one.

If you have a stone fly up and hit it, then it could have caused it to break.

How much play should be left in the belt once fitted?
I'm on my original belt of +20K miles, an I run it with plenty of play/give, no were near as tight as either my cambelt or the OEM V-belts, keeping these belts slack will also vastly reduces bearing wear too, I can get a 180 degree twist without too much trouble between the charger and crank pulley with my belt. I have got some evidence of bits of forign body(grit/stones) getting caught between the pulley and belt, but nothing that has caused a failure.

I used to tighten mine up the same tightness as a cambelt, so you could only twist it 90deg between the bottom pulley and the charger pulley, lasted years like that.  In fact I never had a belt snap, I replaced it once just because the old one was old.

I'd advise anyone with toothed belts to carry a spare in the boot.  I did even though I never needed it.  It's not like you can get the correct ones in any halfords like you can with a fan belt.
