Where can I get a 5th gear
« on: August 02, 2014, 01:11:30 pm »
As in the wanted section, I need a 5th gear for my ATV g40 box.

I did a search and saw that a few of you have eaten through 5th gears on track days and the likes. Where did you get your replacements?

Also saw that some had the idea of using the 5th gear from an 8P/CEG box. What cars are they off?

Any other ideas on where to get a 5th gear that will work well in my g40 because I have no idea where to get one :(

Thanks

Adrian

You can't get them from VW any more - they went obsolete a while ago.

I had mine from a CEG mate. It has almost the same ratio with the ATV.
I bought this box for 100 euros and it was from a 1.4 mk2 ibiza.
VW will ask you a lot more for just a gear...

I've found a ceg 5 speed gearbox for sale for £175 ... Should I go for it saying its unlikely I get anything cheaper than that? Will the 5th gear fit straight into the atv box no problem?

 Thanks guys!

175 pounds are quite lot for a ceg... Take a look at your local scrapyards
CEG's gears are slightly longer (compared with the ATV) except 3rd. The crown wheel makes the atv longer.
Yes its a straight fit.

Thanks mate, I reckon ill just try to talk the guy down on price as I doubt I'm going to find any in the scrappys round where I live. Hope I get it sorted soon.

Ceg is the same as an 8p fifth, longer than an atv fifth by a fair bit.  A 16v mk4 fifth will be nearer what you want.

yeah an 8p/CEG 5th is annoyingly long, there's a huge gap between 4th and 5th.  I had a g40 with an 8p 5th on for a bit and you have to almost red-line it in 4th in order to stay anywhere near the power band when changing to 5th.  I found it annoying.

Also £175 for a CEG/8P is crazy money.  I've had several of them for free over the years.  I'd not pay more than £50 for one myself.  £175 should be G40 ATV box money.

buy this, swap out the gemini for a standard diff and then sell the gemini for £400:

or just buy it, sell the gemini and keep the rest as spares and put the 5th into your current box.

Good thing I read this before buying. Thanks a bunch Paul and co.

I have a quaife diff fitted to the box and don't really have the money to buy that suggested gearbox with the Gemini.

16v mk4 what? Any links to one or advice on where to find one please like gearbox codes etc? Getting desperate as I have no clue about gearboxes :(

Thanks again, really appreciate it.

no idea of the codes but it'll be from an early 6n (mk4) polo 16v, so something like 1996-1998 or 1999.  Still probably going to be a couple of 100 quid though, not that many of them about now.

I think the AFH gearbox is a code CWX.

Thanks for the replies. I've been told the 5th gear from a gt gearbox [code: ahd] would be a good choice :) - any objections to this?

What is the difference between the GT gearbox and the G40 gearbox out of curiosity?

And cheers, I think it is CWX after looking on clubpolo.

Thank you.
