What's in a name?
« on: October 17, 2012, 02:26:17 pm »
The rise of the PC brigade seems to have seen the death of the nickname. "I felt demeaned"
 " I felt de-valued", "I was a victim" goes the mantra (although the 400 was quite smart).

Over the years though we've probably heard quite a few worthwhile ones from the witty to the downright abusive which used to be part of life's great tapestry. We've all heard of Teflon the non stick welder for instance but what about "Blisters". Blisters always appeared after hard work was over. "Nimrod" was always looking for a sub (subsidy/loan). "Hippo"was 100 kilos and black. "Ripcord" had dwarfism and a  hunched back and "Superboot" who suffered from Polio as a child and had one leg dramatically shorter than the other, had a platform soled toe-tector long before the advent of the platform shoe. "Tunc"is self explanatory and the arcane "Peggy"a poor bastard who had no bladder control and had to resort to a clothes peg.

None of these guys took any exception to what they were called, in fact,it seemed to give a boost to their personna. So what's it like today? Anything like that out there or are we all walking the line?

I get called Juggo. It's hardly original but it's better than the other things I get called.

Wonder what faux pas you commit or abberation you have to get called spina bifida; assuming you don't have spina bifida. It's the history that's the entertainment sometimes.
A guy who lived in a block of bedsits near where I lived was known as Rooster behind his back. Apparently he had a penchant for buying whole fresh chicken then binning it after a couple of days.

I went to school with a mate named Russell. I don't think I've known anyone with as many nicknames;

His mum thought he looked like a mole when he was a baby, so he was called that for about the first 20 years of his life.

He once mentioned his dad had raced his bike at Mallory at the weekend, so for that reason alone he was called Mallory.

He was also known as all sorts of variants of his name; Russell dussell cookamuscle
Dussell
The Artist Formerly Known As Dussell (or TAFKAD for short)
The right honorable Mallory cookamuscle of Dusseldorf

He decided he liked the name Billy (his middle name's William) so started calling himself that. That's stuck for a while, but not before his previous name he got somehow; Minge. Pretty sure that would have been a creation of his own as well.

Exciting stuff.
