G40 head bolts....
« on: August 13, 2012, 07:00:36 pm »
Hi everyone,
Managed to order the last PY head gasket in the UK that my local parts supplier could get but I can't get the 98mm head bolts....

HOWEVER! I've spent a good hour in the parts catalogues with him checking torque figures, bolt lengths and thread lengths. The cars we did find the the correct spec bolts was actually a 1.5 santana and a 1.0 polo....

Now, my question, as you probably have guessed is can I use either of these bolts on a G?
I didn't want to say yes order them to him incase the metal wasent the same or something else as I've truely no idea. They torque the same, the heads are m11, the thread is indeed 98mm.... But I'm not sure so anyone who has any guidance, please, fire away.

 Regards,
Ben

I always use VW bolts. IIRC its more to do with the tensile strength.

according to etka the g40 bolts are g40 specific.

they are same length as earlier polos (solid lifter heads) at 98mm but from what i can gather these are only 8.8 tensile not 10.9 which g40s are.

Ahh I see, it was the tensile strengths I wasent sure on. So VW can still get the bolts? I ordered a brake reservoir and they told me they couldn't get bolts or gaskets.... Hence resorting to the local parts place who managed to get me a original G40 gasket anyway.just not sure how to get hold of the bolts now, if anyone can help with that?
Not having a car isent easy, local parts places aren't that local when you live in the sticks :-(

Thanks very much jezza. VW said they can't see any on system in dealers in the UK after looking. So I guess, obsolete :-( much to my upset!

Well not all bad news, now I have a G40 genuine gasket I'll set that aside and as a temp I'll get the aex head gasket with the 95mm bolts and long term I'll invest in the ARP's as it isent going to get any easier to get hold of bolts surely :-(

 Thanks Pete/Jezza :-)

the max-rpm ones and bartket -  well g60s run stock polo headbolts not g40 spec. so they'll supply the 96mm long 8.8 ones you can get at gsf for £1 a bolt

You should never re use the bolts as they will stretch. Even after my engine rebuild that lasted 50 miles I didn't re use them for my next engine.

I will ask my local Vw and see what they say. Everyone seems to get different answers from different Vw's which I never understand.

look on the elring catalogue... they dont list g40 headbolts as specific.

I ordered 10 head bolts from Vw 2weeks ago. When I got them the guys there said they only had 19 left in stock. So there should be 9 left unless someone has bought these... Not a clue how they have 9 left, I assume they have lost one at some point!

Either way it's getting harder to get engine parts now as more an more ins becoming obsolete it seems.

Does seem to be abit of a pain getting parts!

Whats the story on them ARP's, re-useable a certain amount of times or?

I'll get a AEX head gasket and 95mm bolts ordered tonight as a temp and use this G40 gasket and the arp's when i comes off the road for abit more umph  ::)

Now i dont know if this is useful at all...

but someone posted this not too long ago.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BGA-Automotive-Head-Bolts-BK4398-/330728967871?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4d00fb8ebf#ht_1092wt_1141

doesnt mention tensile strength .. but does have listed G40 specific bolts..

someone to clarify would help.
