mk1 golf conversion
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:52:56 pm »
I have heard someone mention using mk1 golf driveshafts and i believe struts aswell on a mk3. I was wondering if this is true then would you then use mk1 golf cv's.

If this is all true would a ppp stage 3 subframe still fit?

thanks

I know that mk1 struts have been used (modified to fit) and that the frames fitted with this. Don't strictly know about the mk1 driveshafts although i would presume they do as ive useddriveshafts from mk3 polos on mk2 and mk3 small block golfs.

Nice one!

How did you work out the correct steering TCA bracket position height?  Side by side comparison?  Always wondered about it. ;D

Providing the setup you'll use fits the stock ARB/TCA then our frame will too.

Kriz- you got pics of the Mk1 Golf CV Joint next to a Mk3 one, out of interest?

Are the mk1 coilovers a straight fit with everything lining up? Or was modification of the steering arms or tca's needed?
Thanks

You have to weld polo steering arms to the struts.

What do you mean? Is it done in the pic above?

yo!
i havent got a side by side comparison - but the original G40 outer cv joint went into the mk1 golf hub and had about 4-5mm of difference!!! it would spin round in the hub no problem without any of the teeth touching! so the mk1 golf gti hub is bigger on the spline dimension.

i worked out the height by lowering the car on the deck with no arms connected and set it how high i was going to run it - then marked it on the strut. - the ackerman angle i then copied by using the same angle you have on the standard shocks - and this works perfect:-) guy (mclovin on clubpolo) fooked this part up when he copied me and had the wrong angle so it steered like a pi$$ed up shopping trolley and had to come round mine to put it right.
there are 2 types of hub on the mk1 so make sure you get the "GTI" hubs as the lower spec ones have a different ball joints and wont fit!

i no longer have these as coilovers - there now air ride

il try and answer any questions as soon as i get time

What's people choices on coilovers to use with this modification? I presume its worth spending a fair amount on coilies but quite afew of you have chosen shocks n springs combos over this. What's your thoughts?

whats so good about mk1 golf legs?
no harm meant to people running them, just curious why you do it?

For very low cars the seperate hub and strut allows for a little camber adjustment to get the wheels back to a decent angle.

ah ok
i presume also that it enables to be run lower as mk1 shocks (inserts) are shorter than g40 ones
