Much bigger choice of coil overs for mk1 golf than polo. Possibility of stronger cv joints is interesting though!

even if they don't go and snap them by being stupid, they don't last all that well with ~200lb/ft going through them :D  so if golf ones are indeed stronger then that's worth looking at.  I think I'll get hold of one and compare, I've got loads of old mk3 polo ones knocking about in my garage.

yer the camber adjustment was awesome- im down really low and my wheels are straight. they can go a little bit lower aswell. but the biggest reason was cost! i made mine 2years ago and cost £160 for the shocks (fr&rr) £30 for the hubs, bearings and new hubs £65 and the old shocks cost a fiver from scrappy as they were bent and the welding was £10. i didnt need to buynsome stuff new but i did and the total package was £270 + £90 for the new cv joints.
this is still cheaper then the 700+ KWs which were the only ones i could buy at the time. i know guy had all the parts i used lying about so his conversion cost him only the cost of the philJ shocks!!!! bargain!

I'm currently using polo struts I've converted to coilovers using a £50 coilover conversion kit from rallydesign:

Even cheaper but doesn't give adjustable camber, but then I have adjustable bottom arms now so that covers that.  What top mounts did you use with yours as the golf ones are bigger diameter piston rods arent they?

when my current koni shocks wear out I'll probably replace my front setup with golf stuff since I'll probably be able to get shocks more matched to the very stiff springs than any I've found for a polo strut.

top mounts are easy- i used early audi 80 mounts which are identical to polos but with a 14mm hole in the bearing- or just tap the bearing out of a mk2 golf top mount and swap it with the one fitted to the polo one- job done

I am collecting the parts to do this on my gt bready. The last parts I need are the audi top mounts and the cv joints.

I am struggling to find the correct cv joints? Also does anyone know how long the spacer should be for the bottom bolt of the rear coilovers so I can make one instead of use washers? Just trying to get stuff done ahead of time as I dont want my car off the road for too long.

mk2 scirrocco cv joints are what I used and they fit.

Just take the bushing out of the bottom of the polo shock and fit to coilover, easy

So who here has measured the ackerman angle?  I have calculated it to be 16 degrees but does a polo use ackerman or a variation of ackerman? Will measure soon as the evenings get longer.
