for a while now ive had rough or clicking clutch pedal.  ive tried a new cable, ive refitted it numerous times and fiddled with the adjustment but i just can't get it to remain smooth..sometimes on a drive itll stay smooth and other times its rough and horrible.  its had a new clutch, thrust bearing and the gearbox has been rebuilt..i also took the pedal box out and fitted another one but the one i took out was fine  anyway.  If i take the cable out it pulls through perfectly free and smooth and its only when fitting to the car it does this.  Usually when first fitting the cable its fine too but then will eventually revert back to feeling rough.

what i have noticed however is that if i reverse the pedal will feel smooth for a while..i don't understand whats going on to make it feel like this? Anyone had similar problems?...and overcome them?  I ws convinced it was the cable but now im not too sure?  Just to add ive removed it and oiled it too but still no joy?

after a new clutch, new cable and new pedal box in my old g, i put it down to the bush that the swingarm goes into in the box...  never did replace it though.

is there a bush you can replace?  I didnt know about that! obviously id have to whip the box out and replace it wouldnt i.

I can feel the clicking/creaking if i get someone else to press the clutch pedal and i hold onto clutch arm on the gearbox.  its seriously annoying but at the moment i just can't be arsed to take the box out to sort it. So Rae you'd blame the spline getting all dirty and un lubricated?  What sort of grease should be used?

Dan

I would use a high melting grease on the clutch lever arm, something like bearing or CV grease.

You can get a clutch pedal lever bush from VW.

i have exactly the same problem buddy, iv only got as far as replacing the clutch, releas bearing and cable as yet, but that med no differance.  and iv had uther problems 2 sort lol, my next call was going 2 b 2 luk at the clutch arm/fork from gear box but dont no wen im guna get chance,

myn seems 2 get worse on a long ish drive frm start up it seems nearly ok but gets worse

Wiggy

I also have this problem....it got so bad that one day i tried pressing the pedal, and it bent......... :-o :-o

Now, due to the extra stress the pedal box is foobarred, so i'll be replacing that in a week or so and see how it feels. However, my creaking really feels like its coming from the pedal end.

I did however notice that spraying 3in1 oil down the outer cable housing from the gearbox end helped a little bit. But not a lot.

Without going into vagcat, I asume 14 is a seal and i think 11 & 12 are brass type bush rings. They are pressed into the gearbox casing if they are like the similar one for the starter motor shaft.

I replaced number 7 on mine when i did the release bearing. Was only about £4 or £5 iirc.

Clutch cables can go stiff and creaky. Worth checking that at the same time as the pedal box and lever arm.

Aye, i reckon the creaking is more likely to arise from bushes on the pedal box system.

Will try and get photos of them brass bush rings tomorrow. I have a gearbox in pieces with that arm removed from the bell housing.

both my mk3's did this and even my mk5 does it

al be interested to see what the solution is

My genesis was on 60k did it even after a new cable (as i thought this was the problem)

GT did it on 1st engine, second engine it did it, but not as much, clutch was newer and lighter. After a long journey it got abit notchy

GTi does it. new clutch 20k ago. Only seems to do it after a long journey or whenever engines bin running a while.

Puzzling

Starter Motor bush

Interesting thing with that starter bush is its from a 58k miles box and as the photo shows its slighty broken on one edge. The starter motor shaft on the car wasn't disengaging properly when fitted too.

as ive said ive replaced and adjusted numerous times its defo not the cable.  It's not the pedel box either as i changed this a while back when i thought it was that...and it made no difference. i got the pedel box out of a very low miles car.  when i said 'creaking' i was trying to describe the feeling more than noise...theres no noise from anything just feeling through the pedal.

Anyways Nick..cheers for the photos...so how do you get these bushes out? plus..is it a possibly its the arm?  Im thinking about the possibility of it being the splines of the 'lever' which slides onto the arm (parts 9 and 13) having wear on them and them 'slipping' if this is at all possible?

that part you mentioned 7?  what exactly is this?
