Should there be a spring on the clutch lever on the gearbox

Sorry, probably wrong terms there.

The 8P box I ran for a while came with a clutch return spring on it, which I don't remember the ATV or my old AHD box having. It goes between the casing and the lever which the clutch cable attaches to. Should this be there?

There is no spring if you have the original automatically adjusting clutch cable (I think all Mk3's originally came with the auto cable). You need a spring if changed to a manual adjust cable.

i agree with g40 supercharged

only pence from vw too!

Cool, ok thanks.

Only reason I ask, I've got the spring and my clutch pedal is really stiff. Pretty sure I've got a genuine VAG cable, if they're both sprung would that make the pedal stiff?

I think the return spring just stops the arm flapping about - it doesn't add much pedal effort compared to the massive diaphram spring in the clutch cover plate (although a badly worn cable can make it stiff). When I first got my G40 the clutch was on the way out and the pedal was really heavy. I replaced the friction plate and release bearing and it was much better (even though I still had the original cover plate). If the clutch release arm is all the way towards the front of the car the friction plate is worn down.

Alex

Hmm, new clutch might not be helping then. I've got a spare clutch cable at home, might try fitting that.

what clutch have you got fitted?  The uprated plates that come with helix clutch kits have stronger springs in them which makes the pedal quite heavy.

It'd be an uprated cover that would increase pedal effort as opposed to the clutch plate itself.

Pete, whats the part number ? ! Can't for the life of me find that spring on ETKA !

yeah I meant the cover plate!

Alex

It's a Helix uprated one, that'll be the reason then!
