Ball joint refurb
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:48:04 pm »
I've got some g40 TCA with the rose jointed inner joint but the outer ball joints are worn out, dose anyone know if there is anywhere you can get new joints put in or refurb kit so I can do it my self, its only a pressed in ball and socket,
You can't get the g40 TCAs anymore so don't want to chuck them!

Would it be worth getting the rose joint done to?

that's a cool video, I might give it a go with an old TCA.  What is he welding part way through though?  Is he just doing that to get some heat into the metal to push the ball joint outer casing out? (and/or welding a ridge to push it out with)?

Yeah i thought about getting an old one as well. Wonder what size ball joint will be needed?

I would of thought it would be to do with getting it really hot, as it would expand then quickly cooling it to make it contract so it comes out easier.

Will send him a message on youtube.

He grinds the old balljoint down to separate the ball/thread part from the bearing and smashes the ball/threaded part out. That leaves the bearing race in-situ, so he runs a bead of weld around it to get it hot before throwing it in the water to make it contract uber-quickly and drop out.

As Andy said- it also works if you leave them to air cool, I've done it on a stubborn wheel bearing race before, bead of weld round, allow to cool, weld/race contract and pop out.

Neat trick providing you don't weld the race to the housing...

Dose anyone know if the rose joints can be pressed out? Or are they in with cir-clips (haven't look yet) Been looking for replacement ball joints cant find any in the size I want so im thinking of taking the rose joint out getting standard arms and getting them machined so the joint can be pressed in because standard arm inner diameter is smaller and tapered for the bush to fit.

Right Ive managed to press the rose joints out! So I'm going to buy some standard arms and get them machined out so I can press the rose joints in hopfully if the standard diameter is smaller witch I'm sure it is.
I will get some pictures up when u get the measurement
