Title: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: Jester on May 25, 2012, 09:25:08 am
Hi, not been a member on here long, mainly clubpolo and edition38, but i've owned quite a few polo coupe's, genesis and breadvan's.

Anyway i had been on the look out for a nice genuine G40 for a while when this one came up on pistonhead's, some of you might recognize it due to it's number plate and i believe the chap before me went to a few shows, the car isn't standard engine wise, interior has had a couple changes too, It's not my daily car and has and will be sat in the garage most of the time.

Since owning it I've only added/changed couple things, put original amber indicators, side repeaters and rear lights on with German spec one, changed plates to non GB striped ones, chrome door handle inserts, returned it to the badged front grill, installed oil catch tank, boost gauge (will sort insert probably) and generally cleaned up the bay etc. but it's been well looked after.

Here are some pictures;

Welcome, that looks nice and tidy. Good to see someone has used a decent bore of pipe for the breather too.
Title: Re: My Polo G40 - thought i'd share.
Post by: Jester on May 25, 2012, 11:59:20 am
Yea quite a beast of a pipe, it was about twice that length. overall happy, but i'm not keen on the exhaust system on it, backbox fell off the other day and it's hung as high up as possible.

wondered about replacing the back part with this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160468429214?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 ?
I'd rather have a standard looking single pipe one.

Another clean G with just a little bit of artistic interpretation; very smart. Looking to re-cover my seats too, haven't sourced tartan leather yet though.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone  :).

Alex - I've read your full build thread, love your car it's awesome and a brilliant colour.

I`m really happy with the interior re-trim, usually not a fan of leather. The chap who had it done had G40 embossed into the seats too, it's a bit more bold in person;

Post by: Alex on May 26, 2012, 11:27:34 pm
Thanks - always nice to hear some love for it, it's not really up on the latest fashions (no stretch, not slammed, narrow wheels) :)

That looks like an expensive job on the interior (I saw my fair share of cheap ones at Max - they're usually baggy, wrinkled affairs)

Bang tidy chap!

Amber indis look soo much better imho.

Fitted a pair of amber repeaters to my old G60 with my mate at the weekend, tiny change massive difference overall.

Post by: Jester on June 18, 2012, 06:45:06 pm
Thanks for the nice comments,

The wheels are the original G40 BBS RA's 13x5.5, I been stripping/painting a set of 14x6.5 RA's but haven't managed to get any tyres yet.
I believe the tyres are Kumho powermax 769's 185/40 I think and it's lowered on some KONI springs, unsure of the height but its about even with my other polo coupe which is 60/40 Weitec set on.

Post by: Jester on September 15, 2012, 03:56:43 pm
right, not sure who really reads this but I thought i'd update it a little..

Fresh badges, kinda prefer the silver 'polo' rather than the older black I had, my brother hand painted the 'supercharged' one:

Next up, was my birthday and my sister got me a 'stubby aerial and a fresh seal too  ::) (still needs a little work so it's consistent width)

the chap on eBay messed me around with the GT wheel so I've ended up just keeping the 300mm momo, hand painted the text red and put black bolts in, it'll do for now.

my boost gauge insert was a little naff and rushed before (made from a spare ash tray insert).
Anyway I had a spare parcel shelf which some guy had drilled 6x9 in so it was worthless anyway, I cut a square out the right size and drilled the 58mm? hole into it to fit the gauge, then i covered it with some random cloth stuff i found in the house, wrapped and glued and slots in nice with no need for bolts, can be adjusted whenever too;

That car looks soo good, how easy was the supercharged badge to hand paint as mine needs doing,
I like the touch up on the momo too looks really smart
Such a  clean body too
Love it

What size your bbs?
Title: Re: My Polo G40 - G40 KCK
Post by: Jester on November 11, 2012, 09:40:33 am
Hi, thanks for the comment ;)
It's not easy to paint the supercharged badge, because it's a weird surface, when you paint onto it, it kinda sucks the paint to the center of each letter and leaves an uneven surface :s.
My brother had to do my to finish as it's quite frustrating. but i'm sure you'll manage it, its yours painted silver?

To answer jezza, the wheels on the first page are 13x5.5 original g40 wheels, but on the last few pictures (e38 ones) I've put 13x6 which were originally an extra option for the MK1 golf, or so i've read.

Title: Re: My Polo G40 - G40 KCK
Post by: Freddy77 on November 11, 2012, 09:49:13 am
Yh mine is a silver one, I will manage it probably,
I like those bbs too they looked a lot smarter than standard
Title: Re: My Polo G40 - G40 KCK
Post by: Jester on November 11, 2012, 10:44:38 am
Yea, I think the little extra dish really helps on the 13x6ers'.. Your badge looks pretty good in silver to be honest  ;D
Title: Re: My Polo G40 - G40 KCK
Post by: Freddy77 on November 11, 2012, 11:46:57 am
Well hopefully I will get a new rear badge when I'm feeling
A bit more flush, then the silver badges will match
But there are many more things to sort first. Mainly the engine

I hope I get to bump into this at some point this year, any ideas what shows you plan on attending?
Title: Re: My Polo G40
Post by: Jester on March 14, 2013, 06:26:49 pm
Right, to answer the questions, they're 13x6 with ET 11, Pretty sure BBS mahle's are my favourite wheels.^

SuperMario, I should be at some shows this year, just attended Ultimate Dubs which was sweet, will hopefully be at Early Edition, E38 and maybe VWfestival.

Finally got the wheels sorted, me and my brother have had to mess around with them because of the weird offset, but finally settled on 20mm rear spacers and 8.5mm front spacers (wheels didn't fit over breaks). anyway I love them and i think it looks smart.

Haven't updated this in a while, car's been off the road for a few months having some bits done to it.

Replaced cambelt/waterpump
Toothed pulley kit (65mm)
Replaced distributor
New coolant bottle :D
got original airbox + tube of some nice people on here!
full charger rebuild by Pete Mirfin, couldn't thank him enough for his kindness and helpfulness, he got me the toothed kit, pump and cambelt also.
the result is really good and it runs really nicely - Just had it's MOT today and passed fine, so thanks Pete :)

Anyway I decided to give it a good clean and took a few photos of it after a short drive;

Not really an interesting update(not sure many people read this), had a great weekend at Edition 38, finally got around to removing my tints.

picture from Edition 38 that my friend took;

Picked a set of front headlight protectors up, in original box/instructions - tried them out, excuse phone picture.

So small update, been gathering piles of new bits and slowly sorting it out with the help of my brother, got round to spraying up the rocker cover and fitting that, massive improvement and the colour came out nice.. most recent bay photo.

cleaned up all the arches and waxoiled them.

going be sweet once it's got all new parts on it, painted up some bits, arb, brake calipers, struts etc just to freshen them up, will keep updates coming of progress.  :)

cheers guys,

Little update, fitted my new wheel bearings and hubs.. also sanded and painted up my struts so they look half decent with just the calipers left to go on (waiting for new bolts)
Got the front suspension on with the new shocks, springs, top mounts - thanks to Pete again for helping me with parts.

Not a very clear photo but you get the idea.

Also fitted the ARB blocks I got from PPP.

Hopefully be making a start on the rears next weekend if all goes well.

Another little update, finally got the car all back together working sweet, ride height and comfort is much better. No photos though as the weather is naff so cars still tucked up in the garage  ;D

In other updates, got some yummy bits for christmas (some mentioned earlier)
Genuine headlight protectors, some genuine 6x4 rear speakers from a mk2 golf and a couple of other g40 related bits :)

I've got that magazine somewhere. It's disappeared into my many boxes of stuff and hasn't resurfaced since we moved. I've got one with the old new Beetle concept on the cover too, from 1994.

So finally had a dry day so thought I'd take it for a short drive just to run it, drives sweet, I took my camera with the intention of getting some photos, but only managed one before the battery died  :-\

Bit of an update, picked up a PPS subframe of tom on here for a good price. made a start on sanding it down as it was bright pink! (not my cup of tea) ~ I will make it black.

Then managed to source a set of these in sweet condition, just need a little clean;

And a bit off topic but I'd been hunting for a 190E for quite some time and one popped up only a few miles from me, so when and checked it out.. turns out it was extremely mint and makes my G40 look naff :(.
Anyway it's now my daily cruiser ~ didn't really want a red but can't be picky with older cars!. Some pics.

It;s just the 1.8L 5 speed manual, so as slow as a tug boat.

How hard is your suspension mate? Put my new wheels on and they catch, dont really want to roll the arches, have you rolled yours? Maybe I should go harder springs...  Hmmm
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: Jester on March 07, 2014, 08:23:10 am
My suspension has no give at all on the front, rears used to catch on the koni shocks/springs but now doesn't.

Aren't your new wheels 14's?
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: z3i on March 07, 2014, 10:15:56 am
Yeah they are, but my wheel arch gap looks similar to your 13's
I turned up the damping 5 clicks on the rear and it was rock solid, bounced everwhere, was horrible, if anything it made it worse, seem to catch more!

Post by: Jester on March 07, 2014, 10:44:05 am
Are they just straight on as well with no spacers? what tyre sizes did you get?.
they're ET26 them comps if I remember right? so shouldn't really rub, would be rubbish if you had to get camber shims or had to roll the arches :s

..or what Pete said.
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: z3i on March 07, 2014, 11:39:39 am
Yeah that's not a bad idea, got 20mm spacers on the rear and none on the front, rears have a little poke, maybe get a 15mm spacer? I really don't want to roll them as they are good condition

The offset is confusing as fuck, says 14-35 et, so what the hell does that mean lol, I went for 195/45 toyo's look awesome :D
The thing is I like that the rear j's slightly wider than the front
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: PeteG40 on March 07, 2014, 11:51:16 am
Get 15mm spacers? Or try 2x5mm one side to see first.
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: Jester on March 07, 2014, 12:07:16 pm
14-35? maybe the 14 is the diameter.

If they're ET 35 i'm not surprised they're rubbing on a 6.5J with 20mm as mine are ET11 with 20mm spacers :s
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: z3i on March 07, 2014, 01:31:21 pm
Nice one Pete :) I have those two 5mm spacers dosing about, I'll give that a go :)

I don't think that is the offset, it's only catching a little bit, right on the inner arch plastic, will get the belt sander and skim a little bit off to improve things

Oh yea sorry, brain dead

scrubbing has got to be related to the spring travel mainly. One of the main reasons I got harder springs was to stop my scrubbing.
Title: Re: My Polo G40 KCK
Post by: z3i on March 07, 2014, 04:33:25 pm
I'm worried about going to hard incase it bounces around lol. Just had another look and there is quite alot of poke, reckon they could go in a little

180lb springs on rear and 250 on front I think, front is quite alot lower yet it doesn't catch

So little update - changed my wheels to a set of 14" Mahles to improve my ride height as the subframe was hitting the floor quite alot on the 13's

Happy with the look but the handling is rather compromised due to the tyre choice I feel, tyres for 14's are such a pain more so on bad offset wheels, not generally a fan of stretch either.
In order to stop them scrubbing on the front I had to change my brake carriers to VW1's which again seems to have made the brakes worse if that was even possible  :P

Couple of most recent photos.

Thought i'd update this a bit.. haven't had any time/money to really do much on it due to my mercedes dying so hunting for another car... anyway.

Dropped the fuel tank today to find a nice rusty hole from behind the filler neck pipe into the rear quarter. believe there was a metal pipe covering the return fuel line which has rusted away,

I've cleaned the area up. it's a bit awkward to weld in there so going to have fibreglass it up I think, but it could be worse. Can kinda see the hole on this picture if you look through the arch haha.

Started a bit of waxoyle and got a little carried away, need to drop axle/brake lines/fuel pump etc..out next weekend hopefully. getting some bits powdercoated.

Thanks Alex, still alot of work to be done, had a busy weekend on it - fully waxoyled underneath now

Stripped out firstly.

I got some sound deadening/insulation stuff and laid it out after clearing up all the shell.

Didn't get many photos as didnt have SLR to hand, few after half carpet back in.

Still got to sort doors out as they're a bit of a mess, got new door seals fitted eventually and other half of carpet.

Also shortened the gearstick a little too. Just waiting on my fuel tank to start putting it back together, will get some better photos with slr next weekend if tank turns up.

Bit of topic but got a new daily as my 190e died.

So I had a day out at SamG40's and bought some fk Konigsport coils

I had a temporary set of PhilJ shocks/springs on mine. (horrible ride)

Anyway this is how I got them:

Stripped them down, sanded old paint off and greased up the threads, then gave them a new coat of paint:

Rears fitted ( touched up paint again once set to usable height):

Photos of the front is poor as it was late/dark by the time we'd done, I only painted the shock on these as the helpers seemed fine, painted strut too:

And with the help of my brother and a bit of tweaking it ended up like this:

It can obviously go lower, but the offset on my wheels is preventing that and I don't want my tyres mashed up, I just want the previous gap slightly reduced and a much better ride quality!

I'm sure it'll settle a bit.

Thanks  8)

Resprayed this elbow while I was at it to clean it up a bit

Then I gave the car some proper Waxoyl cover, rear beam a bit of a paint just to smarten things up, I need to reseat my exhaust with new clamps and rubbers as it took a bit of a beating on the way to e38.

Gave my arch's a bit of a clean up and also, will need to set coilovers up once I've fitted my wheels as I've returned back to the original 13 ra's with some 175/50/13 yoko's

Wheels need a bit of a clean and got some new centres lined up for them hopefully

And this is my engine bay at the moment, currently waiting for a new thermostat housing then I can put it back together, i've also given my rocker another spray of paint just to smarten it up.

I got hold of a battery cover too, believe it's of a mk4 golf though so it's quite big, will need to tweak it a bit.

Not the most exciting update but more will follow in time, just trying to clean it up.

What waxoyl did you go for?
looks like a nice coverage.
I like Dynax S50 or UB
Some swear by dinitrol

I've used Hammerite  waxoyle , always have! Tin and brush for the archs, spray cans for the underside.. I did it all lying on the garage floor  :(

Another update,

Bought these random sponge things of here a while back, didn't really know where they went... however noticed on my golf today it the same things to stop the parcel shelf tilting up and down over bumps, looking at my g40s boot I noticed to sticky areas and on the parcel shelf there's like to outer notches, so..

Two areas were like this on the boot, both have the little metal spikes and the notches on the parcel shelf meet up with it.

Now when boot closed matches up level and stops parcel shelf movement up and down over bumps, who knows if this is right but all kinda makes sense  ;)

See the notches on the shelf here kinda, this also shows the fresh boot carpet from Pete. (cheers Pete)

Engine bay now all sorted, missing one jubilee clip from boost pipe which is in the post.

Put my wheels on with some new centre caps, car and wheels still need a proper clean, I've raised the coilovers to what should be a good drivable height.

Rich helped me reseat my exhaust with new clamps/hangers and it's sitting much higher and nicer now.

Built up the courage to open the NOS mats haha, also got some mudflap 'polo' inserts of Pete which were brand new and slightly modified them to fit the mats, looks quite smart.

Fixed my heater, just need to get my radio working as it's stuck showing 'code' again even though i've already put it in  :(

Thanks for reading.

Where did you get the sponge thingys from?  I'm missing them as well and I hate the shelf rattling on bumps

I got them off here about a year ago, can't exactly remember off who but they were practically brand new. you could probably make them yourself out of some very tough sponge, the parcel shelf doesn't budge an inch when they're on though!

I saw a polo on ebay with 16k miles on and even that had one missing!..so they must of all just evaporated early on.

Yeah it might have to be a DIY job.  I found the part number though 871867759.
How do they attach, are they just glued on?

Oh nice one on finding the part code, could be useful to some.. mine came with double sided adhesive tape on them.

Well after many months of been tucked under it's cover finally got a fantastic day to take the G40 out  8)

Drove perfectly, exhaust occasionally catches on some bumpy roads but I'm hoping to get a full custom one built up in the near future!.. I got some pictures of it covered in dust and mud on my phone:

Took the G40 out today for a bit, currently borrowing Rich's 14 RA's on 195/45 proxies which give a sweet ride.

Bit grubby but got a couple pictures of how it's sitting.

MOT time soon, done less than 800 miles this past year  :( :(

So G40 went through it's MOT fine  8)

Gave it a wash and a proper polish as it's probably been a good year since. couple of pictures I got today:

I'd been craving another Coupe for a while now and one came up which was exactly what I'd been waiting for in terms of spec and colour + it's an extremely clean example (my mk3 golf was costing me too much so that's now gone)

Anyway I picked it up standard and I've literally just washed & polished, tidied, serviced it, put my 13 Ra's on with yokos'.  Here are some pictures of it

Bit of an update,

Been looking for a set of new wheels for a bit, toying with the idea of 15's and quite an unusual set turned up for sale close by so took the plunge.

Here are some recent photos;

I'm loving the way it looks currently, was unsure on the white against red but it's grown on me...haven't driven it on them yet though  :-\

Thanks.

Lovely cars.

Do any of them have any arch work at all or are they standard?

Cheers, arches are still standard bodywise but the arches have been rolled on the inner lip & also no arch liners in the front.

So..the 15's didn't last too long  :-X

I saw Sam had put up his 14" Compomotive Mo5's up, I'd always wanted a set so I made a trip to his which is always fun ~ cheers for the cup of tea  ;D

They're 14x6 ET38 I believe and my brothers been kind enough to give me a set of 195/45/14 Toyo Proxies so got them on. I've raised the car around 20-25mm just to help as it was awfully low on the 15's.

I'm kinda liking the white still but I may potentially invest in getting them powder coated silver, I'm also most likely going to get myself some centre caps.. probably just some simple black ones. Feel like I should probably settle on a set of wheels haha

Well passed MOT for another year.. finally got some centre caps and stickers for the Compomotives. Struggled to find the more common decal that would fit as the spokes are smaller on the 14's than the 15/16/17's so ended up with some  that are a bit more retro, but i think they suit it well. Also fitted the wheel bolt caps on too.

Cheers man, umm not sure really I've finally got it to a point where there isn't much else i'd want to do other than use it. Wouldn't mind a new proper built up exhaust or hangers as mine tends to knock against the exhaust tunnel  :-\

Took it out today and got a picture;

Been a while since I posted in here, no real updates.. gave it an MOT this week and it passed emissions first time!, replaced the lambda sensor on it finally so hoping that's the cure.
Couple of advisories on the brakes, but mainly due to it being parked up most of the time.

Random photo, looking more original these days as I need new tyres for my Compo's
