I have just replaced my dics, looked around and deided to buy grooved and drilled discs and Red stuff pads from EBC, all seems to be well. Along with the dot 5:1 and brembo braided hoses.

Doesn't stop instantly ofcourse, but compared to standard its miles better.

It's all down to making sure you have the bake brakes set up aswell.

Yep good advice, make sure the backs are setup well. I use the standard Brembo discs from GSF and they are ok.

all new all round makes a HUGE difference.  Drilled/grooved/plain wont make much difference at all.

Yeah, I'm with Pete on this one.
I think the problems associated with grooved and or drilled discs make them more trouble than they're worth. I have experience of all combinations of the above (though not all on Polo's) and I'd never use any of them again.
I had Tarox grooved discs and pads on my Manta GTE. They were noisy, didn't offer any improvement over the standard discs in terms of stopping distances and were expensive to buy! Within months of fitting them, the grooves were blocked with pad dust and because of this the pedal fluttered when slowing from high speeds. Eventually the grooves almost wore off one side of the discs (heavy disc wear) ???.
Then I had Black Diamond drilled vented discs on my MK2 Escort and these chomped through pads and eventually hairline cracks appeared between the holes! :o
The grooved ATE "Powerdiscs" or whatever they were called on my G40 weren't much cop either. More heavy wear on the disc faces and partially blocked grooves sealed it for me. >:(
Good quality O.E spec or bigger (256mm on the Polo's) are the way to go.

My first G came with drilled discs and when I took them off there were hairline cracks coming from the holes. No idea what make they were but did put me off them!

Saying that though I took my Raicam pads off the other week and every single pad had a crack through the face of it straight down the middle.

Well once i have had mine on for a while i'll take the wheels off and have a look at the condition of the discs.

I made the false economy mistake of fitting drilled/grooved black diamond discs and green stuff pads, on mine, admittedly the brakes had more initial bite, but I was forever cleaning the wheels with the brake dust they were churning out, and I too found cracking coming from the drilled holes after just over 20k miles.  So I switched to 256mm brembo's(GSF-MK3 Golf spec, cheap too) and the experience is much better, several months later I did a full rebuild on the rears with new fluid throughout and it was a further improvement.  Only got to fit rear braided hoses now and the set-up is complete in my eyes.
My recommendation for anybody doing brake work is all new on the rear from VAG(exchange about £30) plus all new good quality fluid thoughout, then you can decide if you do need to any upgrades!?
