HELP!! someone make this decision for me!!!
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:57:24 pm »
I did a 3 year mechanical apprenticeship at bmw and have just finished, during the apprenticeship i was subject to poor pay treated like a dick by managment and genrally used as a dogs body. however i did complete it and learn a great deal and gain serious amounts of confidence with cars.

in recent months i have picked up spraying and am a natrual as im painting panels to the same qaulity as the proffesionals
i have been offered a job at sewards prestige in fareham doing mechanical for really good money £8.50 an hour which goes up to £10.50 in september. though, the hours are long, work is tough, facilities are crap compared to bmw

handed my notice in today and my manager has offered me a two year paint apprenticeship from bmw which is pretty darn hard to get these days and my wage is now £6.10 an hour so still crap but reviewed each year. working conditions are good, people are good and i enjoy it there. though realisticly i will still be treated like a little boy, and do all the skivvy jobs

im torn on what to do. asked so many people and they all say different things, mum said get as much experiance and qaulifications as possible. dad said go with the money as you will be treated bad at bmw. girlfriend said get rid of my polo, which wasnt constructive nor helpfull
also bmw is 7 miles away sewards is 20 miles

this is the biggest decision ive ever had to make so can someone make it for me? haha
but seriously from an outside perspective what do people think? i know its my decision but i really dont know, painting has always been at my heart as thats what i orignally applied for 4 years ago before mechanical
im out of ideas and this is givving me a massive headache! maybe i should go for a drive :P

You've got some good offers there mate :)
Think you've just got to think about what will be better in the long run 10.50 an hour is pretty good but if you do the spraying apprenticeship then maybe in the long run you could open up your own garage and offer more that just mechanics but spraying and body work aswel.
Also if you took the spraying job which is less hours than the other job maybe you'll have time to fit in some other people that want jobs (spraying and mechanics) doing on there cars which could be a nice little earner

Indeed! thats why i want to choose the right offer :S
Spraying would definitly be better in the long run, its only two years which is pretty short and yes that would be amazing if i could do that and open a garage! maybe doign restorations as thats what ive always wanted to do (specialising in polo's?) haha. on the other hand i dont want to say no to a really good job offer.
just have to grit my teeth for two years and be an apprentice again for minimum wage
yeah my manager seems alright doing my own car, i sprayed loads of my golf panels :) could maybe sneak in a few wheel refurbs for people now and again, that would bring in some decent tax free money. might ask him that today as im in a good position because he doesnt want me to leave.
well im off to work to make probably the biggest decision on my life so far :S

Being treated like aa dick and getting the crap jobs is part of any apprenticeship. It's part of a sort of right of passage, sees whether you can take it or not; many can't.

Graig G's advice looks pretty sound long term, especially as you've always fancied spray work.

So you've put in three years and to do another two you'd walk away as a BMW trained mechanic and sprayer. No brainer to me. Get the training while you can especially if you know its in a good environment and with people you can learn from. Opportunities like that dont come along every day. If you got one job with a garage as easy as that you can always get another one.

How old are you (I'm guessing 19-20)? The additional money may be a big attraction, but don't let it blind you. Although loath to say it (And I'm a teacher here!) qualifications are overatedas I don't personally feel that a lack of them represents a lack of skills. However, the world doesn't work like that and employers want qualifications, even if they are ignored as soon as you get the job. Therefore my recomendation would be to stick where you are, in a 'safe job' (your boss seems to like you, but don't push your luck), gain aditional qulaifiactions from a well respected manufacturer and re-assess your options in 2 years time, when you've finished your paint course.

The danger with going to a smaller firm, and as the 'last one in' you are going to be first out when the shit hits the fan and work becomes scarce. I worked in a garage, unqualified, but the works was piecemeal, I didn't know if I would be needed from one day to the next. Is the small firm going to put you through an aprenticeship too? Probably not and if you have to leave, you will have nothing to show for the time you've put in at the garage.

My advice would therefore be to stay where you are, seems you have it pretty nice. By showing loyalty, and a willingness to work (even if you are treated like shit, suck it up, you have a job) other options may open up. BMW is a big company and you could go anywhere within that company in the future, out of the workshop or within it. Starting up your own company may look like a good idea now, but its a lot of hassle and graft (said garage was an aircooled resto place, one man operation. The old boy is knackered at 50-odd and works 6 days a week). BMW will reward you nicely, and they seem to be doing well currently, so are likely to be around for a while. My Cousin works in quality at Aston Martin and has reached his pay ceiling because he lacks qualifications. If he'd stayed on and got some qualifications, he'd be earning substantially more. Pay isn't everything, but its worth considering how decisions now may impact later in life (as old fashioned as it sounds, live for today isn't really a responsible attitude).

A quick word on your conditions however. Your dad's advice is bad. I'm not sure how badly they treat you, but i'm sure it's no worse than I (and many others) have been treated in thankless jobs I've done (-30 in a giant freezer anyone?). As mentioned, its all part of being on the bottom rung. It will be good for you to appreciate what it's like to be at the bottom, and if you get to the top you can have sympathy to those working for you. My Dad was a quality manager for an electronics firm, answering to the board of directors yet he would periodically work the shop floor to show solidarity with the 'common' worker. Be good experience for you.

My advice: stick where you are, gain experience and then make a few more, well informed decisions when you are qualified, older and have a little more experience. You seem to have it pretty good atm

I agree with Sam. Having 'BMW approved' qualifications & experience in any field you want to go in to will be worth it in the long run. Whatever they teach you will be widely recognised as best practise. You'll struggle to find anywhere with facilities as good as you'll have access to there in future as the investment in equipment & training to keep up with the latest developments in mechanical & paint production & finishing techniques will be second to none. Grab it while it's on offer. Suck it all up and do your best. Do any/all the qualifications you can get them to send you on. Make & maintain any contacts you can along the way.

In short, if they're going to give you apprentice pay & give you some shiz (I was an apprentice too - standard issue), rinse them out for all the knowledge & qualifications you can get before you leave.

Having both mechanical & paint strings to your bow will make you valuable to future employers but once you've gained your paint qual's, make sure you say that you specialise in one thing rather than both or you may risk being labelled as a 'jack of all trades' rather than a specialist in one. I know it goes against the 'strings to your bow' line I just quoted, but all I'm really saying is to market yourself properly.

Best of luck pal.

Thanks for the advice everyone :) well my dad changed his mind today, said "your only 21 so still young enough, think you should go for it" lol so everyone ive asked has said stay
Not saying my apprenticeship was the worst ever or anything, but my mentor is 50 and has had 5 apprentices over his time and says the way my apprenticeship was run was the worst hes ever seen.
my manager is only keen to keep me because he can get me to do the skivvy work. and its cheaper to employ me and put me through an apprenticeship rather than employ a fully paid tech. you always need a skivvy
all im doing at the moment is painting wheels,
your all right, i would be stupid to let an oppertunity like this go. just have to grit my teeth and get on with it
my manager is sorting out the paper work before i turn sewards down, also sewards is a massive company and have the biggest smart repair bodyshop in the uk
appreciate all your input, i was getting drawn in by decent money at sewards over the apprenticeship

well that's just how they work, if it wasn't for that no business would bother taking apprentices on.  But in the meantime you get your training and experience!

BMW > Sewards

BMW will be here long after they are, also gives you the choice of moving into being a mechanic, or a bodyshop chap.

BMW Master Tech isn't a badly paid position  :)

Also apprentices are treated impeccably these days compared to the first person accounts from some of the old boys I’ve spoken to, but it is like a rite of passage, give it a few years and you’ll be abusing the next teenager to walk through the door!

You must be doing something right, they value you enough to try and make you stay.

Still havnt decided, everyone has said bmw, but theres some pretty good oppertunities at sewards
had another meeting with my manager today, said he cant garantee i wont be treated like a twat :( ive been working there 3 years now, im a fully qaulified mechanic and can already paint pretty much most things but yet im still the runt. i cant see anything changing after 5 years
i would only be doing it for the certificate
but then again sewards will be letting me do paint and mechanical.
also i dont know about bmw scotthall being around forever. scotthall Leeds the biggest scotthall dealership and bodyshop got bought out about 5 months ago. the founder of scotthalls may i add, you never know whats around the corner :S
i would get treated well at sewards, the manager is a really nice guy
i still dont have any paper work from bmw yet so not saying anything to my boss yet
you say that yoof, but my manager was saying that if i leave it will save the company £11000 a year. he has a funny way of making people stay.
i think if he wasnt such an arsehole i would have decided already

I have ended up staying. everyone has told me to do so, and it makes sense :) told my manager yesterday
so as im on crap pay. i will be doing private paint jobs to make ends meet
already have a fair few people who want motorbike fairing sprayed, wheels refurbed a mates engine bay on a mk2 golf. and some how an e36 bonnet?! dont know how im going to get that to a paint booth :S
will more than likely be doing this after Christmas as im about to spend £700 of money i dont have on 2 paint guns lol
im also having trouble finding a booth to hire. the nearest decent one is 70 miles away and charge £40 an hour for usage
but im going to message pete and advertise in the traders section to see how much interest there is
thanks for everyones input, it helped make the right decision as i was going to go to sewards
