Gears in gearbox remplacment
« on: October 21, 2012, 04:09:08 pm »
Hi, been a busy day.
Removed gearbox to fit my new diff swapped crown wheel and speedo gear over to new diff.
all is well although when inspecting
I noticed one of the gears is missing teeth!
Just wondered if anyone could shine any light on this subject, if it needs changing, where to find the correct gear

Many thanks
Rich

I can never remember if thats 3rd or 4th gear. Best thing to do is count the number of teeth on both of the cogs of that gear set, then have a look on vag cat or post on here. Then it will be case of pricing a full rebuild against cost of a replacement second hand gearbox. Gear sets can be raided from other boxes but need to know which gear is the damaged one first.

Cheers mate, All the teeth on the opposing gear are fine, it has 45 teeth and is about 15mm thick
I don't have vagcat so if anyone can help me out of what gear it is would be great
Defo not what I wanted to see when I opened it up lol

vagcat is a website.

I think the only chance of getting a spare gear is to find a 2nd hand G40 box or put up some wanted ads, maybe someone has a spare but I'd not be too hopeful.

I'd give the whole box a rebuild and a good clean (clean all the parts in a parts washer), there will be pieces of that tooth knocking about all over and likely to cause more damage if you keep running it.  VW might sell you a gear but last I heard of someone buying a gear from VW it was the wrong side of £150.

 ill check out vagcat

Can anyone tell what gear it is it the one with the red marker on
:)It has 45 teeth and is about 15mm thick

I ran VW and they said 3rd gear has 45 teeth but that is obsolete

Try VW Heritage or VW Classic Parts too, just in case.

Aren't a fair few of the G40 cogs shared with the GT's AHD 'box too?

I will try them, can anyone confirm that this is 3rd gear
Would be handy if this gear wasn't g40 specific and was shared in other boxes
I haven't got a clue though

Thanks

Yep the gt boxes share some of the gear sets, only one of the five is g40 specific but can't remember if its second or third. What is the number of teeth on the opposing cog? Need to know that to confirm the gear ratio and therefore which gear it is.

4th gear. Shared with the GT 'box and a whole host of 6N boxes I think too!
