200 miles turbo then...
« on: October 16, 2012, 07:13:43 pm »
Right after getting the turbo conversion up and running managed about 200 miles before problems started. Half way back from Gti fest a loud tapping noise came from the engine bay. Checked the oil, absolutely dry. Filled her up at Leciester Forest East till she was at the top of the dipstick. Engine still tapped untill I got home. Checked the oil again and it was pretty much on the bottom of the dipstick so filled her up again.

Smoke then started to pour out , checked the oil now it said it was overfilled. Drained the oil fully and chucked in 3 lt so it was about 1/4 up the dipstick.

Engine is now tapping loudly and smoking like a house on fire.

From my mates I've spoke to and myself we think its either a fried ring or a melted piston, although its running on 4 cylinders

Thing is my AFR was reading 10 whenever on 0.2-0.4 boost as my 6psi switch actually needed getting up there. Engine temps were always cool too.

Not a turbo oil seal?

Only cause my charger oil seal failed and did the same.

I dunno, this is the sort of smoke where the guy behind you cant see where they are going. I've had leaky charger seals before and thats been blue smoke. This is pure white like a steam engine!

Yeah sounds exactly the same to me mate. The charger scroll seal was eaten and it emptied out all the oil. Was pure white smoke out the back and the road disappeared behind me, was quite funny.

Hmm, guess ill check the turbo outlet aswell then. Hopefully this tapping source can be found too , sounds like its coming from the head not the bottom end though and its not light enough just to be tappets

there is a turbo fault finding chart in the turbo section, that might give you a hand

check out the intake pipes for oil. maybe your turbo bearing/bush has a bit of play and can't seal right.

white smoke sounds right if its getting through the turbo bearing and out the exhaust very hot - BLUE smoke if its going through the engine and being burnt with the petrol.

can you see any leaks? like the oil drain or the pressure line to the turbo from the head.

Ill get a pic up of the plugs soon Pete, turns out its skipped a tooth in the acw direction. Shall see how it runs after I've changed that back. Took the turbo outlet pipe off and there was a little oil, started her up and no apparent oil came out.

BP7EVX NGK?

Quite clearly it's rich (I guess to the point of rich missfire) but can't tell from the plugs if it's burning oil- can you get a better pic?

Check boost pipes for oil, check how much is being passed out the crankcase- if a piston has gone combustion pressure will be pressurising the cranckcase forcing oil/vapour out.

Crankcase breather is fine no oil particularly coming out quick. Its defo burning oil as white smokes coming out and its not burning water.

Closer pics of the plugs with flash Pete?

Guna borrow my mates Bore scope and have a look at each cylinder see whats cracking.
