Engine Timing

Just swapped all the engine mount and bottom pulley over for the non G40 stuff so I can run the standard alternator set up when the turbos all together.

The only problem is that I am having trouble timing her back up, clearly the cam is easy to set to tdc and you just align up the marks but when the bottom is aligned up, the belt slipped on and after a full rotation its about a tooth out .

Has anyone had this problem before?

most people set the bottom end with a dti gauge.

If its skipping a tooth are you turning it over with top end??? that can make it skip.  dont - turn over via the crank

I'm doing it whilst its in the engine bay using the standard timing marks "Z O" . I have been turning it over using the camshaft spocket bolt so ill have to use the crank bolt.

I'm trying to maintain the crank position whilst getting the non pump side as tight as poss so i can take up the slack in the opposite side using the water pump.

Just for reference how would you go about using a dti to sort the crank out?

Scratch the above I was using a screw driver down spark plug on cylinder 1 to see where TDC was and it was very close if not bob on with the mark on the AAV pulley

hayesey

I just DTI'd mine as I wasn't confident that the non-g40 pulley mark would match the g40 pointer.  I had the head off so it was easy

with the head on you'd need a long attachment for the gauge to poke down the spark plug hole

The bit that holds a pencil in a compass works :-X Ay what can i say, desperate times called for desperate measures  :D

That's not "desperate times" that's "necessity is the mother of invention". Nice one mate.

Yeah thats good. Cheaper than buying a DTI!!  ;D

I ment as an attachment for my DTI haha. The plunger wasent deep enough to go into the head. So clamped the compass penicol holding bit onto the dti probe, tightened the pivot bit on the compass at about 45 degrees and then shoved it in the plug hole and DTI magnet on drivers side turret :P

Seems good enough, not ideal but as i say needs must, worked though so im happy haha.  ;D

I`ve just had a simular experience putting all the NZ bits on my AAV while doing the head gasket.

Fit a new water pump and vag timing belt but when i put the cam to its mark on the case i could only get the crank
to line up on the ignition timing side of the slot. They are as most will know the other way round to the G40.
To set the crank to the correct side (right) it put the cam at an advanced stage. It was suggested by a mate
that that was the best option but the engine ran hotter so i put it back.
I was going to make an attatchment for my dial test meter but the compass sounds good for now.

I did notice that when fitting the Alternator pulley that it had slop. Even though it has a locating pip,
the hole for it is somewhat larger so given that there is a bit of bolt slap too i`d say theres a few degree`s
either way.
To slip my timing belt a tooth the other way would of been way out.
I timed it with a sykes picavant strobe gun and it seems ok though i have a little flat spot out of idle.
See how things are after the crank breathers connected back up. Having to make new up.

Same situation as me, a little sliggish from idle to rev but once over 1500 or so it revs fine :-)
thats with a non G40 bottom pulley timed with a DTi and compass as mentioned above and dizzy timing set with a good quality strobe and 5/6 degrees advance.

I followed a post on vagdrivers.net as its using the golf mk2 airflow meter which people seem to fit to
GT`s.
Its cured my idle with little movement till i can get it on a gas analyzer and so no flat spot.

Seem some Gunson CO analyzers go cheap on ebay so may have a go at one.
£80 new at Halfords is a bit much for something i`d get out once in a blue moon.
