What difficulty rating would you give a cambelt change on the G40.

I contemplating doing it myself, but if its abit of an arse Ill just pay someone to do it.

pretty simple really, have a look at the haynes manual and see what you think.

Ive got 2 of the buggers somewhere, but when i moved house I seem to have lost them. I may have to get back on ebay and buy yet another.

I have been looking at cam belt prices etc... on the net and there seems to be two different lenghts for the G40 PY engine. Is there a way of knowing which one I need. I was just going to buy one of each to be on the safe side and then sell on which ever one i didnt need.

shouldnt be different lengths, they'll be different tooth profiles I'd have thought.  G40s should pretty much all be the later round tooth.

you can find PDFs of the haynes manual online easily enough, not that I'd condone such piracy ;)

these are both quoted for the PY engine, one has 128 teeth the other has 108. Either way there not expensive but im pretty sure mine is the top one by the setup of the diagram.

yeah but that's just a difference in teeth.  you'll more than likely (~90% chance) want the one with more teeth as this will be the round tooth one.

I was just thinking one would be longer having more teeth with regards to the spacing between the teeth if you see what i mean.

Im going to get both so im covered either way.

Cheers for your help fella.

the next question is going to be, Where do I get a new water pump from as I may as well change that whilst im at it. I presume VW will probs want my arm and a few teeth for one.

I'd have thought same place as your belt is coming from.  No idea how much they are from VW but I wouldn't have thought that expensive, it's a fairly basic service part.  Otherwise, GSF or Euros.
