K03 clocking bolt
« on: April 10, 2012, 02:17:09 pm »
Same as what happened to Cheys, one of my exhaust side bolts was seized and no amount of hammering on smaller spanners could have saved the little fella. Ended up cutting it off. Is it necessary to replace the bolt as I would assume the turbo would have to be dismantled to get the left over thread out.

Cheers

Did you cut just the head off? If so, the bolt thread should be proud by 3-4mm when you remove the triangular clamp thing? Definately replace the bolt.

Will pm you back tomorrow btw :)

Get some Vise Grips on the fucker and wind it out. From memory I had to use a cold chisel and a hammer on one of mine to get it out.

The threads been ragged out now, only problem is with the space given i'm probably only guna be able to chuck a bolt with half the length down the thread as its fouling on the centre

can you not spin the bearing housing round a bit to get a full sized bolt in and then put it back in the same place once the bolt clears the housing?

can't you just split the exhaust housing from the core now and put a proper bolt in?  Or have you not loosened the other bolts for fear of them all rounding off too?

gets my vote, saves the added danger of splitting

Going to take it to my mate who has a big enough vice to lock it in so I can spin it round to chuck a new bolt in and get the right angle.

Unfortunately it only came with two bolts and one tensioning plate on the inlet side so got to find some of them too.

Did you have a browse for that stuff Chris?

iirc the inlet uses the actuator and a single long bracket which goes between the other two bolts to clamp the 'snail' on.
Did your turbo come with the actuator fitted? pm'd last night

what i do is pop mark the exhaust housing inline with the oil outlet hole with a center punch. slacken the bolts and remove the ones you can. then with a copper mallet and holding the turbo vertical by holding onto the comp housing, start tapping the exhaust housing off evenly away from the comp cover. just make sure you do it evenly or you might damage the turbine blades. and once you have it either off or slack just make sure you put it back in evenly too. final check is, is the turbo free to spin and not going to touch the casing even when pushing the blades to one side and spinning.
