Gearbox Overhaul
« on: November 01, 2008, 09:30:22 am »
Changed the gearbox in the G so I currently have my old ATV sitting in my room.

Plan on taking it apart and seeing whats wrong with it. Besides a socket set what other tools do I need. Assume a pair of circlip pliers. Will any old pair do or do I need a certain size?

Thanks guys

you need some torx bits to undo the selector mechanism bolts, I forget which size though.  It's just the bolts on the outside of the box.

You'll need a gear puller too if you intend on taking the shafts out, fifth gear has to come off because it's on the outside of the casing under the black cover.

I'd be tempted to just take it to a specialist.  Or at least get hold of a cheap/free knackered 5speed polo box to practise on first (that's what I did), taking the innards of the box apart isn't for the faint hearted!  I've got my old ATV sat in a box too, it wont go into 1st gear.  But I'm not doing anything with it, it's waiting to go to a proper gearbox rebuilder.

cant help with rebuild advice but jp race only charged me 300 quid delivered back to me for a full rebuild including new seals and bearings..not that much really imo.  would expect it to be a lot more.  scum bags didnt change the selector seal copper housing though which is about 5 quid from vag..i didnt know they hadnt changed it until about a month later and it was pissing out oil which meant i had to drop all the oil put a new one in and new seal..rang them and was told 'well you didnt ask us to change it' lame! why should i?  thats their job to know what needs doing.  other than that i was impressed with how quick and effecient they were.
