Gearbox Fluid Change
« on: October 30, 2008, 12:57:08 pm »
Is there anything major to look out for when attempting this? Guess it would be good practice to undo the fill plug first and then the drain plug just incase they don't want to come out.

The first thing I'd check is the condition of the oil seal on the selector rod. If like most it's weeping, now is the time to change it. They are only cheap to replace.
Give the car a good run to get the oil nice and hot, this'll help with draining. Remove the filler plug first (NOT the large plastic plug on top of the bellhousing!) as this will help vent the gearbox when you take out the drain plug. With the oil hot and the box vented, the oil should drain easily. Obvious I know, but be careful of hot oil!
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Richard.

Buy a good spec oil too, I always feel that on sealed applications like gearboxes, then there is no point putting in a cheap motorfactors oil, buy the best you can get, I refilled mine with Torco stuff from Demon Tweeks.

Thanks guys, was going to go with the genuine VAG fluid. Had a look at the Changing gear selector rod seal and bush FAQ but it no longer shows the attachments  :'(
