Volvo 240 242 or 244
« on: January 04, 2012, 05:43:01 pm »
Im seriously looking at getting an old 240 and pimping it up a bit.

I have always wanted an older volvo and have sorta fallen for these.

I so badly want one but at the moment i just dont have the space or the funds as i have far too many projects on the go. What are peoples thoughts on these?

Gav

I have a friend who is currently building a 244 estate I think... An putting a T5 motor in it. Should be nice when done!

940 2.3 turbo lump drops quite nicely into the bay of these  ;)

That red estste one is an absolute beast. Thats what made me want to get one.

Its running the 2jz-gte engine from the MK4 Supra, and standard they are quick, but to strap a whopping great turbo on it too, It must be pushing out around 600 BHP.

I have considered doing the conversion myself, i have an engine and all the running gear in my own supra which is seriously tempting me.

One of them's on my "cars to own" list. Never really looked into it much more than considering getting one at some point. There were a few turbo variants in the 80's I think. A mate had one and said it was great fun. I suppose it's the same element of surprise as a G40, looks like your grans car (or grandads in the Volvos case) but goes like the clappers!

Yeah, it was the 340.

Great potential for fitting different engines into from either Volvo or Renault.
Looked into fitting the B23T lump as mentioned earlier into my old 1981 343, but in RHD layout, the turbo would foul the master cylinder so you'd have to custom make some sort of manifold to get around this.
Settled on the N/A injection(K Jet) 2.3 lump in the end. Still bloody fast but not mahoosively quick.

ive seen quite a few with clio 172/182 lumps in ive never realy looked too deeply into it but i would consider one as mine next project. out of intrest why do people use renualt lumps do they have similar mountings? or do they require the mounting points fabricating/chopping about ??

The 1.4 and 1.7 engines that Volvo fitted to them when new were from Renault. Only the 2.0 engines were Volvo items. The 1.4 block is the same as the R5 GT Turbo for instance  ;)
