Actually, nope.  Double checked and found they were going clockwise. d'oh.

Once that was sorted, I fired her up and she idles.  However, still seems to be hesitating and I'm not getting full power.  Wondering if the timing needs properly adjusted, but is there anything else likely to cause this i.e. plugs, ht's etc...  (I have a new set of ht's on the way)

Cheers.

I did try advancing it and retarding it very very slightly, but didn't seem to make much difference.  Is that likely to be more than a few mm out?

Reason it wasn't making a difference was that I'd forgotten to unplug the blue temp sensor.  Timing is now spot on after borrowing my mate's timing gun.  Still misfiring though due to a faulty spark plug (replaced the ht's with double silicon ones).

New spark plugs arrived today though, NGK BP7EVX ones, so should have the car running properly this weekend.  Is it not saturday yet?  ;D

I know, I'm choking on driving it  ;D

Need to get the merc sold first and that's got a few repairs needing done too. Probs be next month before the polo's back on the road. Then I've got alloys to buy, more lows, pulleys, induction etc, etc.. It'll be an ongoing project for a while I think.

Gonna give it an oil and filter change this weekend too.

After fitting new spark plugs, the car is now running sweet as a nut.  ;D

Anyone want to buy a merc?  ;)

Finally got the car on the road tonight after fitting a new hub. Snapped a bolt in the old one and couldn't drill it out.

First time I've had a proper drive of the car as it was bought as a non runner.  Wasn't giving it full throttle as I want to put a few miles on the rebuilt engine first but damn these wee cars are fast.  :D

Well, that was short lived.

Whilst trying to run the engine in, I've made a stupid mistake by topping up the oil with what I thought was the right grade, but which didn't mix for some reason.

Result is I think I've cooked my engine.  Managed to get the car home, but was losing power and the engine was getting progressively more noisy.  Went to start it up the following morning, and loads of white smoke tell me the head gasket's gone.

I replaced the gasket with a used one I had in the garage also using used head bolts (both used only once previously).  Obviously, I know they're supposed to be replaced with new items, but couldn't get hold of them at the weekend.  Started the car and still blowing white smoke.

Questions:

1. Is the head likely to be warped, which caused the head gasket failure.  The gasket which was removed had no obvious damage, i.e. blowthrough etc...

2. Will a skim and new gasket / bolts replacement be likely to fix this?

3. Do you think using new head gasket and bolts will suffice without the skim?

Thanks.

Decided to hold off on the head skimming and change the gasket only.  If I still get the dreaded white smoke, then it'll definately need skimming.  Hopefully it won't come to that.  Fitting it tonight.
