Lubing charger
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:11:17 pm »
What parts do you lube when putting back together?
Just the bearings or the whole scroll and outer ccasings?

Cheers

It would be a good idea to put a bit of engine oil on the bearings aswell

not the swirly bits,

just the walls of the charger above the swirly things!

Why not the swirly bits? I guess by swirly bits you mean the area where the Apex Seales move against creating the swirly pattern? So why not there?

my understanding is that the lube ensures a seal to push air forward, on the walls it stops it leaking back.  Whereas the apex seals are of a compound that wear in to the casings to ensure a good seal.

Thats my understanding anyway (jabba instructions on a rebuild kit said something like apply it to walls just of the casings and light oil on the scroll - something like that IMO)

I've never understood why the apex seal seal contact surfaces should not have spray lube on. They will get lubed with the oil vapour when breather is still connected. The swirl marks deffo become more pronounced when boost return was ditched on mine.

the swirl marks are normally pronounced with dirty oil IMO

I guess leaving them dry speeds up the bedding in process when the charger is first run in.
