is my g40 precat?

its a PY engine code, i think that makes it the age where i dont need a cat, am i right.
just i was going to change the engine details on my log book so i can legally run without a cat.

All g40 engines are py.

If your car was regestered after the 1st september 1992 it will need a cat, unless it was made 6 months before the 1st september. My car was regestered on the 2nd of september 1992 but comes under the non cat test when its being m.o.t'ed as it was made 6 months before.

well my car was registered 1997, but im not sure about the engine, i have a polo 6n, how can i find the age of the engine?

I'm sure its pre 1st August 1992 is non cat though. Remember its only since new reg format that change over went to September and March.

ETKA has a list of build dates against engine numbers. There is also a list of chassis numbers against build dates. All UK G40s came with cats but most were built in the first half of 1991 so should be cat exempt (if you are prepared to argue the case). My K reg one was 18 months old when it was first registered and was built just a few weeks after my H reg G40.

I think wbaxter90 will find that his 6n will require a cat regardless of the engine type fitted.

Yeah, my 6n had a decat and when it had a mot the emission's were very very high. Just get a sport cat or put the cat on for the mot?
