**UPDATE** New engine - starting...but tapping
« on: March 14, 2010, 08:19:53 pm »
Hi all,
yet another problem for me!!
I purchased a new engine of Yoof, which there is no problem with, however the car now doesn't start?!

The engine went in in about 15 hours with no problems whatsoever, however now there is nothing when you turn the key.

The ignition comes on, lights and everything work, but only a click when you turn the key to start.

I can't even hear the fuel pump which i believe i could before!

I've checked for loose wires and earths and fuses but can't see anything amiss.

Is there anything that anyone can think of?
Are there any more fuses other than the ones in the scuttle panel?

Help much appreciated!!!

Thanks

Ben

no the starter doesn't turn, i will check the hall sender tomorrow.
Blade fuse is fine, is there any way of checking the relays?

I forgot to mention something possibly quite big, when fitting the new engine the negative terminal was touching the battery still and we did get a few sparks!

Thanks

that might've done a fuse or something.

Is the starter wired up right? spade on the right terminal? (nearest the engine)

unplug hall sender, look on the dizzy for the -, 0 and + marks.

use a screwdriver or paper clip to short out the - and 0 on the connector.

you should get fuel/spark each time you short out.

if that works, then your ecu/relays/fuse all okay, just need to plug hall sender back in and get the starter working, you should have a working engine if HT leads are on in the right order! :)

No sparks when doing that, so it's down to ecu or the relays? (i've double checked all fuses and they look ok)

Thats what i thought at first.
Starter is wired up ok - just double checked.
Are there any more fuses than them in the engine bay?

Thanks!!

10 points to Pete
connector was on the wrong terminal on starter motor - my dunce of a mate out that on and assured me it was right until i double checked it yesterday.

However, it still doesn't start,
there is no spark at any lead.

two plugs on the coil the wrong way round? dizzy died in the shake up? coil died in the shake up?

test as rae says - if still no spark then its likely the coil.  If there is then probably hall sender

does the coil look like this?

or this?

generally the first is a later spec one.  If it looks like the bottom one then its probably original!

you can get pattern ones fro £20 on ebay.

it looks like the top one, however there appears to be no power coming into it through the connector?!

edit : there is power going in, just made that up!!

new coil, still no good!
there is a current coming through one of the three pins.
Is this normal or should it be through two?

have you got the earth cable connected from your engine to the body/battery, these Polo's need a good earth.

also i have had this issue where i didn't get any spark or fuel priming and it was due to an iffy ECU chip, this might be your issue if you have shorted it out when putting the engine in however mine would crank though.

also how good is your battery?

thanks everyone, was down to the plug going to the coil and the plug that is on the metal bracket next to the coil being the wrong way round.

Next question though guys - what's is the pipe that comes from the scuttle panel but doesn't lead to anywhere?
leaking all the coolant out of there now when turned on.

Thanks again
