K03 Shaft Play...
« on: February 14, 2010, 08:50:05 am »
Hi,

If a k03 turbo has play in the shaft will a service/rebuild fix the problem?

What causes play in the shaft?

Thanks :)

It depends what you mean by 'play'. Most turbo's use journal bearings which are designed to have a fair bit of gobble in them, this space is taken up by pressurised oil so that the whole system floats. About 1mm radial clearance is perfectly acceptable, and it has to be double that before it effects the turbos operation much. Axial clearence should be considerably less, you shouldnt be able to detect much of that.

Well the guy who owns the turbo said,

"slight movement in the shaft no fins damaged would advice a rebuild to get rid of the movement in the shaft"

Just working out if its worth buying

well like tommo said you will get a small amount of radial movement when there's no oil pressure in the bearings.  So it depends what type of movement he means and how much there is.

Probably not as a rebuild on a turbo is more costly than buying a second hand k03 or even a cheap Chinese copy !

I would rather run a knackered genuine one than a chinese copy. Poor performance from them and it will make a right mess if it ever lets go, which it is more likely to do due to poor material quality.

Whenever you buy a turbo always check its genuine, I really cant express how much work goes into making the things perform well and hold together. And the chinese just reproduce somthing that looks about the same.

This is worth watching, although its the americanised version which drives me nuts...

I hate the bloody voice over. Especially the bit with the school bus where they are practically saying if you buy a fake turbo then your kids will die.

Reminds me of that car add off the simpsons where it says "if you buy an import car you are taking food of an american familys table" haha

we have cummings engines with holset turbo's on our fleet of diesel trains and never get any problems with the turbos, unlike newer merc built engines.
