After getting fedup seeing all the people posting pictures of their G40's that they actually drive I decided to start a topic for those of us with cars just sitting in the garage/drive, so to start it off here's mine.

my car did have a flat battery this morning.

although I recharged it. I am only in this thread to take the piss. Sorry

Alex

Mine's not really a non-runner, though the battery's flat at the moment because I don't use it much:

Seems strange not using it really, this is a car which used to rack up 12-15k miles per year with almost no complaints. I think it's done about 2,500 miles since last September, of which a thousand were going to the Ring and back. Press cars mean I don't have to use it, and as I worry about things it's just been easier for me to use them.

It's only got a fortnight left of this luxury though - after that I move to Max Power and it'll be a daily again. Looking at getting a Passat 1.9 TDI in August/September though to keep the miles off it. I've got used to air con, power steering and diesel fuel economy, I think I'll miss them too much to give them up. Plus I can modify the Passat however I want for the Max staff car section, and take things slower with the Polo as I have been so far. I'm picky with things that go on this car.

hayesey

will max power pay for your modifications to your passat alex?

Alex

Sort of - let's just say despite not working there full time the Polo's already been treated well as a result of its monthly appearances in the mag.

I'll be in charge of products, clubs and events when I move. I reckon it's the best job on the mag, not only does it mean I get paid to socialise with the full spectrum of car enthusiasts, but it'll allow me to get close to parts suppliers, which has some big benefits.

PeteG40

well then any negotiating of a clubg40 discount would be appreciated!!!

Alex

If through trying to source bits for my car I can get you guys discounts then I will put them in touch. :)

NeilG40

That'll be another passat owner then, perhaps we should start a subset of Club G40 for people that also own Passat's

Alex

Hahaha! Yeah I realised when I started looking that it was possibly a bit of an obvious daily driver.

But then why not? I need something as reliable as a watch with a diesel engine. I don't want a big French or Italian saloon, and a Mondeo or Vectra would be too much of a rep car. Swedes are cool, but not easy to mod. That leaves German or Japanese. There aren't that many decent oil burning Japanese saloons, which takes that option away. Then you're kind of left with German.

Dig a little deeper, and BMWs in my price range are mostly petrol. Mercs are mostly automatics and petrol, not to mention a bit OAP. Audis are lovely, but again most in my price range are petrols and older/higher mileage than the Passats.

Basically for the price I'm looking at I can either get a Passat of about 6 years old, an Audi A4 at about 8 years old or a Golf the same age as the Passat. Since both VWs give similar fuel economy, why not go for the bigger and more comfortable car?

So, um, yeah basically that's my reasoning for getting one.
