My mate has offered me his ats classics, almost new for good money including 5mm spacers for the front, bolts etc.  Just gonna try them really see how they go. So ive put them on but the front ones were catching on the carriers?  We ground them down (much to my dismay) and they fit now.  But why the hell are they there?  especially when the normal cl etc ones will fit? I know the obvious answer is strength but are they really a great necessity?  They've been ground down and they're pretty thin. Shall I just cut them off instead??  My mate has exactly the same callipers on his early mk2 golf gti but the carriers again don't have this on?  Anyone else just cut them off? I know i could just swap the carriers but at the moment i don't have any and what really is the difference in carefully cutting them off to putting non-g40 ones on?  As far as i can tell nothing?

Anyway...depite the fact that they need balancing again as the steering shudder at 60mph isn't too good...and they tramline a bit too, the handling is noticably better which can only be a good thing.   Can't believe I've changed the wheels but fancied a bit of a change some way or another anyway so why not!

thanks

What exactly have you ground down?

The front bar of the carrier that goes from the top to the bottom of it.

i'd put cl ones on dude, the last thing you want is for the carrier to break and the caliper or pads to come loose.

Aye good point actually. I can't see that happening but it'll look a whole lot better won't it.
