just wondered if anyone knew how much difference the induction kit made vs the air box.

I'm in two minds about getting an air box to replace the induction kit to make the car more usable but hate spending money on reducing the power of the beast.

so, if anyone knows. is it a big difference?

That a vw part? doest it make a difference inside the car?

Sure is, came on diesel mk3's (only available on the continent) and was an optional extra on mk3's over here I believe. On ETKA it's like €280!

I have it on my GT, (don't have a G40 yet) and if anything it protects the engine from the cold weather outside, I don't have an induction kit but if I did i'd imagine that it would kill the sound reasonably. I'm sure someone will come along and give you a full description on what it's like on a G  :)

Came standard on early CL squareback too, mine's got one ;)

g40 + cotton filter = more particles in the charger = more wearing = money woes later in life.

g40 + paper filter in std airbox = :D

Exactly what jabba said!

Why would Jabba back up the standard airbox theory but actively sell the K+N filter(or equivalent) with an R1 spec charger etc??

Was speaking to brian their charger guy for an hour about whats good / bad for the chargers. he said paper filters and standard pullies and you could see a rebuild hit 70k miles!

it totally depends on how you drive it.

pootling round, perhaps 40-50k at a push.  However i've seen ones at 15k on a 65 pulley in need of a service... but it had been pushed everytime driven!

I personally wouldn't put a sound proofing bonnet thing on my G. Maybe in the winter but G's can run stupidly hot in the summer when on boost so anything that's gonna insulate is a no no as far as I'm concerned. As for filters. I had an old jetex panel cotton filter in my standard box. I stupidly left it for a long time thnking they didn't need changing like a paper filter. The cotton degraded over time and the particles that got through consequently damaged the scroll on my charger. Ever since i've had the charger scroll changed I've used a vag paper filter changed every year or sooner.

personally I think cotton filters are ok as long as you keep them clean and re-oil them every now and then.  Yes they'll allow larger particles to pass through if they're not kept oiled but when properly maintained they are as good as, if not better than, paper filters.  Just stay away from foam filters though, they are rubbish.
