Hi,

Apparently my track rod end has a split so a new one is in order.

Just wondering is it better to buy these in pairs and replace both, or just replace the damaged one?

Also i done abit of forum searching and it appears GSF should be well avoided in reguards to purchasing track rod ends.

How much are they from VW? Eurocarparts stock "Lemförder" brand ones, any good?

Cheers

Ah, which side? :(

hayesey

nearside is the adjustable and removable tre

LeonL

Ah,

Its the drivers side one which is split :(

Guess whole arm is in order then, which means might as well replace the other TRE while im at it

Any ideas on cost from VW hayesey? Also the Eurocarparts ones any good?

The non adjustable off side arm cost me £30 from my local motorfactors. dont think there is really any need to get them from vw, they will be an extra £20 i guess.. gsf or similar should be fine. just make sure you get the right length arm. its approximately 515mm from centre of bolt hole to thread, they seem to list the standard arms as 550mm for some reason.

g40 ones are different as they have rose bushes on the inner joints.  Normal polo ones with rubber bushes will work and be cheaper.  I think the g40 ones are VW only and possibly not even available any more.  Last time I bought a set was a few years ago from VAGParts.com (company no longer exists) and they were about £40 per side for proper g40 ones.  I'd expect them to be more now though if there still are any.

I reckon they're out of stock now, I got mine with quite a wait about this time last year and shortly after that, someone else said they couldn't get them. Hope I'm wrong.

LeonL

Blah that sucks,

Anyone have information/experience with the ones from eurocarparts by any chance?

scotsjohn

Better just going for the standard VW Polo one. I reckon Euro and GSF are the last port of call.

Whats better about the g40 ones having rose bushes then?

The G40 spec ones are obsolete according to my local VW dealership!

rose bushes are spherical bearings which have no side-to-side movement in them so keep the steering arms in the correct position whereas cheaper rubber bushes allow the arms to move about and some of the movement in the wheel is the rubber compressing rather than the actual steering moving.  Possibly not all that noticeable on the road though anyway,

If you're really keen, you could probably get rose bushing pressed into ordinary new arms. Worth thinking about if you're trying to keep to spec.
