Gearbox has been slipping out of gear in 2nd for a while and it was only just slipping out of 5th gear but it only did it when i de accelerated, like when going round a bend or corner.

Last night i was driving and as soon as i took my foot of the accel pedal it slipped straight away. I put foot on clutch and then re engaged the 5th gear without any accel pedal and it wouldnt go in at all.

The thing is, the gear box had been replaced, by a blackdiamond VW887 and cost £439.45 but the AA paid most due to labour and parts cover.

Oh and another thing, when it was on ramps a few days ago, i could actually physically move the gear rod that goes into the gear box, and i thought that really isn't right.

Im not driving unless i have to incase i really do f**k it up.

Any ideas what the problem could be??

Was thinking linkage or syncro?

Jezza-7

I would say it moves but not massively. I can pull it out of 3rd without eveing using the clutch as well.

Jezza-7

Well i would like to think it has got oil. Gonna check it now.

lance

yea low oil makes them pop out of gear normally 5th first

Jezza-7

Oil fine, so took it to vw today and well.... they said it is an internal problem. They reckon its a bearing inside that is broke which can lead/cause gears slipping, thats why three gears slip.

Gotta get the gearbox overhauled and they said its gonna be around the £800 mark.

Need a gear box now.... :(

£800!?!?! L O L

find  a local gearbox rebuilders in your yellow pages and let them sort it out.

Just been speaking to phil and he has got one and will fit it for £450 which suits me.

still probably more than you'll pay to get your current box rebuilt as long as it doesnt need any major new parts.  a rebuild including strip down, replacing bearings and a check over should cost about £250-£300, obviously that'll go up (possibly by a lot) if any other parts need replacing.  Plus that involves you removing and refitting the box yourself.  Up to you really.

Jezza-7

Only problem is that i dont have the tools to do that and dont have anything to get the car up in the air to work on. Plus i get a gearbox that has only done 50k.

New gear box on today. Big thanks to phil and his mate mark!!

Top guys and gear box is sweet. Alot better than the old one.
