1308cc 9:1 with K03?
« on: June 04, 2009, 06:39:03 pm »
Chaps, my engine needs a full bottom end rebuild and the head could well be cracked...

I can get hold of a 1308cc engine, with cast oversized pistons, freshly rebuilt bottom end, but the comp ratio is 9:1.

It also comes with a gas flowed head.

Would I have any issues running a K03 (digifant management) with 9:1?  Power wise I only want about 170-180bhp.

Not sure what to do really!

yea it'll be fine mate little bit of timing retarding will see you right.
all depends how much boost you run, water injection would help too.

Would it be just as worth going 1341cc?

1341 will mean a more reliable/stronger bottom end as you will have forged pistons and, if you are sensible, you will replace all bearing shells, nuts/bolts/gaskets and pumps etc so you know its as healthy as ever!

Only you can really judge whether its worth it financially or not, as its not cheap to do though. Also do your research into what pistons you want to use! There is a fair bit on here if you use the search function!

Is the 1308cc my old engine?  If so, Race Power Motorsport built it.  Was built to rev to 8500 cleanly, karl-schmitt pistons, 9:1 comp. ecu chip limited to 8k at time.  Though needs a change of camshaft to take advantage of the revs, as it only made peak ps at 6600rpm, cam was wrong spec.  Found that out at end, could never get setup and working properly (cam, vernier, charger blowing seal springs constantly, alternator goosed, then piston rings (only lasted a few k miles, etc), as we wanted a peak ps at 8000 - 8200rpm .  I had it rebuilt with stock rings after using a g-lader to use a gt25 turbo with jenvey iTB's and dta management but sold it to fund my house.

Race Power Motorsport are/were in Dartford, Gravesend, DA11 9SN.  Keith and Jim are legends, Andy Boakes worked there too but then went on his own.  Whether they are still going is another thing.

There is another Race Power motorsport in Sevenoaks though, down the road, TN15 8JL... not sure it is new premises or Andy Boakes setting up on his own, since he's from Sevenoaks, possible partner?

Yeah Race Power Engineering is in Borough Green, about 15mins from sevenoaks. They used to be called GP Speed before they moved from thier last premesies however im not sure where it was! Paul is the new owner and there is an older fella called Jim there as well who used to own the business! Not sure if there any links or if its coinsidence... but either way they know their trade!

Paul Sanderson by chance?  Used to race a mk1 golf in the VW CUP, circa '03-'05 i recall?  Was good friend with Jim, keith (poss not there anymore) etc.  They built his engine etc, plus many many other happy racers.

If its the same Jim, he's a complete legend in the motorsport community.
