Oil temp sender - where do I mount it?

I've got oil temperature, oil pressure and boost gauges arriving soon from Stack. :)

I need to find a suitable place to fit the oil temp sender.

Am I right to say these are sometimes fitted inside the sump plug?

What are the alternatives to that? Seems a bit vulnerable to me.

Best place is to get an oil cooler sandwich with an extra threaded 3/8 hole for a temp sender ;)

Alex

Oh balls, I've just fitted an oil cooler with a thermostat plate.  :(

I've seen sump plug adaptors for sale on ebay.  Think will possibly do them too.

Robin

i got a sump plug with a temp sender built into the actually plug, you can get them online easily.

Alex

Are the sump plug ones not a little exposed to damage on a lowered car though?

Dan

Normally not too bad.

ideally, you could get a threaded boss and weld it to the back of the sump. That obviously involves removing the sump. Robins idea should be fine.

Nick_S

Another way i think i've seen, is to fit another charger oil feed T piece setup on the right hand pressure sender. Screw in a temp sender where the banjo bolt normally goes.

Robin

road clearance is not a problem as it only sticks out about 5mm more than the normal sump bolt.

Alex

True but that's 5mm closer to the tarmac and a vulnerable part anyway - I may just get a spare sump and drill out a second hole for it.

hayesey

but you'd need to locate the new hole pretty much on the bottom of the sump anyway or it wont be submerged in oil while the engine is running and will give a next to useless reading.  There might well be over 3 litres of oil in there with the engine off but when it's on the level will go down significantly as some of the oil will be going around the engine.

surely your sump plug isn't the lowest thing sticking down on the car?

Alex

I dunno, never really looked. But, looking at pics, it's pretty vunerable. Mind you, so is the exhaust and that's never been smacked by anything so I should be fine.

I'm pedantic, you should know that by now. :D

hayesey

you'll prob find the subframe sticks down lower than the sump plug by than 5mm, mine does.

Alex

Hmm, I guess mine's not exactly slammed either which helps.

Dan

I plan of fitting the oil temp sender on the rear of the sump. due to the angle on the engine it won't be lower than the sump and will be submerged in oil, no problem. just got to make sure you don't poke it into the oil pump pickup !
