Timing mark?

Just a quick question regarding timing, is there a timing mark on the plastic cambelt cover? If so where would be the best/cheapest place to get a new one? My mechanic seems to think that when my toothed belt has snapped it has eaten into the cover and erased the mark.

It is a metal pointer as standard on a G40. The mark is a groove in the pulley. You should be able to buy it from VW.

on later ones (replacement bottom vw covers) its a marker on the cover - a jutting out bit of plastic
