Running on 13s
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:51:12 pm »
Evening folks. Just been offered some 13s with mega sticky slicks and was tempted to take them for the strip.

Getting my power (200 estimate) down is hard enough on 14s so thought I would open my dilema to the panel.

i dont no what 13's with racing slicks are like for the the strip but a lot of racings cars run 13's with slicks on the tracks and are the choice of size.

The only problem I can forsee using slicks on 13" wheels is if they have a smaller rolling radius than original, which most slicks do. This will reduce the gearing, which on the strip won't help matters. Personally, I'd try and stay with 14" wheels and slicks to keep the gearing somewhere near right.
Obviously you'll only need a pair for the front, so stick some narrow 4 1/2" x 13" steels on the back with 145/80's pumped up nice and hard.

What slicks are they?
A proper drag slick has significant differences to a circuit slick.

G40motorsport, you run 888's don't you?

If so are they 185/60/13s? I have some on my RA's but I think they will scrub. (On H&R Cup suspension)

Do you know how low your cup car is and what the clearance is like for tyres?

Sorry for the hijack lol

Better off with a road tyre than a circuit slick on the drag strip.

Unless you fancy doing a burnout for a few min....

Haven't a clue on it's exact ride height, I have the original Cup struts, with non original Koni inserts and shorter but heavier springs than the original Sachs springs, when I fitted the Toyo's I couldn't get the wheels on so had to machine up some 16mm (I think) spacers to fit under the springs to get the clearance.

They are off a formula renault car.

Will get hold of the specs etc, but you have a point about the rolling radius.

Realistically my G is in bits, I am still using a roll cage as a coat stand, the radiator is in my room and the charger belt is shredded to hell. Oh and I need to prep a Diahatsu Hijet to drive 10,000 miles. Think 'slicks' are the least of my worries

Formula Renault use Michelin's to fit a 13x8 rim
Dry (Slick): for all venues except Thruxton
Front: 16/53-13 Spec. FR2.0
(ii) Dry (Slick): for Thruxton
Front: 20/54–13 Spec S308

If you are being offered old single seater tyres they are prob well past there best, especially if they are from the Formula Renault BARC series as they are only allowed 7 sets per season.
