Why are they better? Just lighter and unlikely to corrode?

aluminum is a better conductor of heat so just the material is more efficient than copper.  Also the size and amount of tubes going through it is important too, these have a lot of smaller tubes than a standard rad which means more tube surface area which means it's able take more heat out of the water.

I've just been looking at my G40 and mk2 radiators. They aren't the old copper core jobbies used on very old cars but alluminium. Obviously they were manufactured with cost in mind as opposed to the higher efficiency core used in the Radtec ones but they are at least ally. Obviously the end tanks are plastic, but I'll be sticking with my O.E. type one.
Personally I would never pay for a new genuine VAG one, but check out Felgenhaus on ebay. A large German based company, they sell the G40 specific radiators (code no. KVW 092) for £45 plus £15 postage. I'd be interested to see if there was any real difference in the quality between a genuine VW radiator and one of theirs? I bet there isn't.

I wasn't aware that there was a specific core make up?
Apart from the difference in size and end tanks, my G40 rad looks to have exactly the same core as my late mk2 one?

It's the core design which gives the G40 slightly more efficient cooling than the standard model rads.

Ah right, I'll have to inspect them closer then!
I'll still get a Felgenhaus one anyway. For that money you can't go wrong IMO.

the proper gt/g40 cores have smaller tubes and more of them giving a greater tube surface diameter in total which = more efficient cooling.  The difference is obvious when you have the two next to each other and look at the cores.

dunno about that, the one I boiught a while ago off ebay had smooth end tanks but the non-g40 core.  It was listed an a genuine new one.  It's possible that that's what you do get at VW nowadays I'm not sure.  For the price of them I doubt anyone buys them though.

I doubt VW recon radiators; they leave that up to the pattern manufacturers. Coupled with their high price, i would assume they are OE spec.

when you get it Dan, can you take a decent quality picture of it?  I'm interested to see what the core is like on new VW ones now.
