What's the reason removing the charcoal canister and the purge valve when removing the boost return pipes?

hayesey

you don't have to remove the purge valve and charcoal canister when you do the BRV mod, and you don't have to do the BRV mod to remove the charcoal canister and purge valve.

people just remove them because they don't really do anything except take up space and add weight.  They were a requirement for type approval when the cars were new for emissions laws.

I think that charcoal canister filter the gas fumes (that are in tank) before they are releced in the atmosfere so it doesn't  stink fuel...
Am i wrong?

hayesey

it stores the fumes from the tank breather and then vents them into the engine instead of the atmosphere.  I've never noticed a smell from it with it disconnected though and older polos (well in fact any older cars) just vent it to the air too.
