Chassis fatigue
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:40:53 pm »
Following on from this thread on how to go about minimising the chances of your chassis cracking up,

http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=7

I thought i'd start a thread to show people what and where to look out for when inspecting mk1/2/3 Polo chassis.

If anyone ever needed visual evidence that the mk1/2/3 gearbox/engine mounts are a bad set up, then take a look at these:

the car belongs to a guy who was asking about subframe conversions on CP.

Yeah, there from a Dutch mk3 G40.
You should see the amount gusset welding/bracing in the same thread to prevent the bulk head going like that!

Well ive seen some bad ones in my time this was a G40 i stripped, just because of the damage, the front end moved, how the guy even drove it i dont know, you could feel the whole side move (ask dougy he drove it 100miles home!!!!)

Examination is the key, a common line to go is under where the drive shaft goes under, get jiggy with a proding tool and check!
ignorance ends in something similar to these pictures!

Well i`de better show you all these then.
This is the G i bought very cheap from a guy in Torbay and the following pics are why me, DK Dan & PeteG40 scrapped it at Dan`s place.
It was a Genisis conversion by the way but thankfully everything was G40 speciffic though it was Gt interior.
There were snot welds from a attempt of repair to the strut housing.
I took it for a spin before taking it to Dan`s and i could feel the front end flexing, so much so that the passenger front wheel scrubbed the Arch.
So in summary-Fooked.
The Blue Mk3 infront on 1st pic will be the conversion car.
better pic at bottom.

Bloody hell, I hope that was very cheap. The inner wings look very rusty probably promoting the stress cracks. Or did the stress cracks promote the rust? ??? Bit of both I reckon.
Fortunately, my 1989 breadvan has a chassis that is totally free from rust. Combined with the sizzling 45bhp the two old lady owners before me put through it, it's also free from any stress cracks too! ;D
That light blue Coupe looks a very tidy example indeed. 8)

looks like it's been caused by shoddy repairs that haven't been sealed properly afterwards, esp if there is welding on it.

That really clean looking indian red GT that Dom guy on Club Polo bought a couple of years ago was as bad as that if not worse, basically the chassis leg was hanging off and that again was caused by poor repair work.  Which was a shame as the car was very clean on the outside and he paid a pretty penny for it too!

Yeah Breadman,
It was very Cheap, Cost me £500 + £140 to get it the 300 miles back home.
There are receipt`s with plenty of work done around the car but why i can`t
understand.
I can only guess that the guy wasn`t very mechanically minded so thought it
would be ok.
There is a receipt from Curbside Motors in Exeter, Devon Dated 17/04/07 for
Engine Work to the sum of £740.62p.
This included new Tappets, Big end set, Headset, sump gasket, Piston Ring set,
1 new Piston, spark plugs (wich are wrong), oil filter.

The description reads-
Strip down Engine
Replace No 2 Piston
Replace Piston Rings
Replace Big Ends
Strip down Head
Reface Valves & Lapping them in
Replace Hydraulic Tappets.

The Engine Ran rather pooh just after startup but i changed the blue temp sender
and re-adjusted the Co2 sensor and Idle screw as the Guy didn`t have a clue
about any of it and said he`d messed with them.
It ran rather well after that and i was pleased with how Quick it was.
Nonetheless, I`m gonna strip it all and check it all out for wear spec
and replace any suspect parts.
The car had done 104k.

The Light blue MK3 Coupe cost me £500 with 52k on clock and is rust free
underneath.

Here is a pic of the Engine bay of the scrapped G40 Conversion.
The Rocker cover was painted blue and very dirty so i used thinners to
clean some crap off then washed it with degreaser wich left bits of blue
splashes about a bit. Hence the untidyness.
Fred.
