Your G40s History
« on: January 17, 2009, 02:21:15 pm »
A guy on club polo emailed me yesterday to say he knows the previous owner of my G that looked after her and did all the work to her.  My email has been passed over to him so I can ask the questions I have for him  :)
Personal owner history is always better than the receipts in my eyes as they know the car!
I think my G is cursed as it seems it has a knack of running real good for a while and then something fucking up, making you put your hand in your pocket. This previous owner spent thousands on her, but my one question for him is going to be why he never got the charger serviced. I also found out that he had the car sat for 3 years and didn't move as he couldn't afford too run it and keep spending on her as something always kept going wrong.

Do you guys have a good history on your G?

Mine was owned by a guy I work with, he's a vw nut. He's still got a sweet Mk1 golf with 2.0 audi lump and lots of other tricks etc... He had to sell the G as he had just bought a house and had a kid... Fuck me... I'd rather have a G40 anyday! I felt 100% confident buying it off him as he always always always looks after his cars properly.... Then the head gasket went on the way home!

Mine's a conversion, but I know quite a bit about where it's lived.

It was bought in Louth, Lincolnshire (but on a Northampton reg - suggesting it may have been a VW registered car, like a demonstrator) in June 1991. It spent about three years there before moving to Bracknell, then Oxford, then it moved to Bristol in 1998 where it was owned by a mechanic at a VW specialist garage. He used it as a daily drive, dog carrier and a way to keep his Beetle off the road. Then, in March 2000, I came along and bought it. The car lived in Cardiff until April 2007, when I moved to Peterborough, and I don't bring it back to Cardiff very often.

The donor car lived near Dudley for the last few years before it was written off while parked.

interesting thread...mine was bought by an old ish bloke in hartlepool in january 1992...he had it 5 years or so then sold it to a dealership..it then ended up with a bloke in durham who waxoyled it and took the badges off  (ill get to that later)..he then gave it to his wife to use (he showed me his corrado vr6 storm in his garage which he bought new and has 17k on the clock.....he also told me it got the front passenger quaterlight smashed for the radio when he had it... he then sold it to the woman I got it from who let it go down hill quite a bit, using it as a runaround to pick her little kids up....when I rebuilt it I took it back to show her...got the badges from the previous bloke and also hunted down the first owner of the car...now in his sixties he was well surprised to see it and told me how within a few months of buying it some prick chucked a brick off the rear quarter edge that leads up the side of the boot...cant see it though as it was professionally repaired straight away....

also turns out that it was sold to my local dealership back in 1996 when the first owner sold it...this is the only g40 they ever sold.

I got my red G40 from a guy a work. He let me have it for the PX value (which wasn't a lot) when he bought a new Mini Cooper (original not BMW) back in about 1999. It was his girlfriends before that. After I bought it I noticed that the original numberplate in the service book was the same as the red G40 on the front of a copy of What Car?  that I bought for the G40 roadtest in 1991 (when we had an A plate 1.3 LX breadvan). After checking with DVLA (you can get copies of all the old V5's for your car for a £5-00 fee) I found my car was orignally owned by the VW press dempartment. They sold it at auction after about 6 months, after which it was used as a company car for about 2 years, then sold to a guy in London, after which my mate's girlfriend bought it. The numberplate on the front of What Car? (H808 GNV) was a VW press department fake but someone had put it in the service book. It appeared in several roadtests (including full front cover of VW Audi Car) with the plate it was properly registered with (H141 ENH). It recorded 7.4 seconds to 60mph completely standard in one of the tests. Car is pretty much completely standard now; I couldn't bring myself to do anything to it so I bought another one (now sold) to modify.

I don't know any of the history of mine :( It's had quite a lot of owners though.

Interestingly I spotted my old G40, now belonging to MikeG40 so was able to give him quite a lot of history about that.  Hope it was useful :)

Mine was owned by a woman called michelle walker for a while,im told they looked after the car very well which is backed up with receipts.Between her owning it and me buying it a young lad owned it and appeared to thrash the s**t out of it,killing the charger in the process. One replacement charger later and it was my pride and joy. I've had it a few years now, and its seen 30+ dubs come and go but never want to sell it!

To get copies of old V5s write to the DVLA - costs £5 and you have to be the registered keeper.
