Gearbox failure?
« on: November 11, 2016, 05:44:24 pm »
Hi,

This evening my gearbox lost drive, I can select all gears but when I release the clutch the car won't move and just makes a grinding noise in every gear. Would I be right in assuming the diff has blown? Or is there any other failures that the ATV gearbox can suffer from?

I won't be able to investigate the issue until next week so just wanted to know if anyone else has suffered the same failure or similar and what the issue turned out to be?

Regards

Charlie

Probably the clutch.

Blowing the diff first would be an accomplishment the diff is probably the strongest part of this gearbox. Gears will shred before the diff lets go.

I'd say the pressure plate has exploded, happened to me a few weeks back.

So......

Gearbox is out, clutch fine, drive shafts and cv joints are fine.

If I try to turn the diff flanges them both seen to be locked and move in the same rotation rather the turning in the opposite direction as a diff should.

I think Jezza has a stock G40 diff kicking around. I've got an ATV box, but it's got an LSD in it

is it a standard gearbox or has it had a limited slip diff added or anything else at any point?

They can sometimes turn in the same direction, can you hold one of them still with one hand and turn the other with the other hand?

I guess if you think it's the gearbox still, you can open it up easily once it's off the car (it's just a load of 10mm head bolts you can see on from the bellhousing side), then have a look at the diff.  It just lifts straight out once you separate the casing.

From my experience of driving it it has an open diff (tons of wheel spin from the lh wheel and horrendous torque steer, part of the g's fun factor).

Will have another look at the gearbox tomorrow morning.

Yoof, would you be looking to part with the gearbox with lsd fitted? As it seems like a logical upgrade to me.
