SOLD
« on: July 18, 2015, 06:28:59 pm »
Hi, for sale is my genuine 1991 Alpine White VW Polo G40. I have had her for more than four years, and have overall really enjoyed my period of ownership, but my new job requires me to drive a lot more, and so I got another car as really I didn’t feel it was fair to put so much mileage on what is becoming a very rare car (less than 100 left licenced on the road). Honestly if I had anywhere dry and secure to keep her, then I would be strongly considering SORNing her and holding on until I could afford to have her fully restored to run only at weekends.

The price is £3250 £2750 now just £2400,  (in the interest of finding a proper home for the car before it gets colder and gritters come out, and avoiding the costs of having two cars I have dropped the price accordingly)

As a general assessment of the car, it is in good shape mechanically, with some cosmetic issues. She is a really fun drive, power easily available, has the torque to keep going at low revs, and keeping at a sensible cruise at around 2500rpm it’s always ready to pick up speed and quickly. The old-skool platform provides easier thrills and a more intense driving experience than newer cars, with less speed needed for serious enjoyment.

The G40 is more practical than you might think. I have never been late for work due to a breakdown. Fuel consumption is excellent for performance, and on a good run being careful I have managed slightly over 40mpg. Insurance is variable from person to person but haggle with a few specialist insurers and I have found you can get some surprisingly cheap deals. You can also fit a surprisingly large amount of stuff in the boot, and really big items with the rear seats down.

The car has an enormous folder of history, including, the original sales invoice from VW, parts receipts, labour receipts, dyno printouts, and ¼ mile printouts. Also includes a copy in good condition of VWM in which this car has a 4-page magazine feature, which in addition to being super cool, pads out more of the cars history.

No service stamps as this car has had most of the basic work done on it by enthusiast owners, including myself, so in my ownership it has had fresh 10w40 Fuchs oil and an oil filter every year regardless of low mileage, and just before I bought it the previous owner had replaced just about every service part imaginable with genuine VW and Bosch Parts.

The car has a fairly long list of modifications, and I will list them as comprehensively as possible, most have receipts buried somewhere in the huge service folder:
•Ported R1 spec G40 supercharger, with paperwork from Jabbasport
•65mm Pulley (standard V-belts)
•Jabbasport induction kit with heat shield
•Cylinder head ported and gas-flowed
•Inlet manifold de-wedged, inlet and exhaust manifolds gas-flowed
•Throttle body gas-flowed
•Samco silicon hosing fitted
•PPP stainless steel manifold fitted, the best on the market
•De-catted, which due to date of reg is entirely MOT legal
•Powerflow stainless steel exhaust, no mid box, high flow, it has a good sound to it, draws attention, and goes nuts on full boost, I have had it tuned to make the noise levels reasonable for daily use and longer drives
•Hi-flow uprated fuel pump
•Mocal oil-cooler, with thermostatic sandwich plate and braided hoses
•Helix fast road clutch kit fitted, probably the best on the market for daily (non paddle clutch) use
•Non-standard discs and pads, with braided hoses fitted
•Koni springs and shocks
•G-laderseite nylon ARB blocks
•14x6 BBS RAs rather than standard 13x5.5, with Yoko A539s with reasonable amount of tread left
•Quaiffe ATB differential fitted to a reconditioned genuine ATV (G40) gearbox, the jewel in the crown of my mods, fitted at no small expense, improved handling, and almost totally eliminated wheel spin

Separately, the cosmetic mods to the car:
•Deleted/smoothed side repeaters, relocated to front bumper
•Smoked reverse light
•Armour doorplates
•VDO boost Gauge
•VW golfball style gearknob
•Rare electric window optional extra, works perfectly

Unfortunately there are a few bad points about the car, nothing too major, but I will try to cover everything, general wear and tear is going to be an issue on a 24 year old car:
•Mileage is about 131k on the clocks, but as I knew when I bought the car the car has covered more, and a clock change at some point hasn’t showed this, but the key fact here is that the engine has been well looked after, and no guarantees implied but I have confidence the engine has plenty more to give.
•Both front wings are showing some rust, still solid, but if fully restoring may be more sensible to replace both for rust free ones.
•Drivers door has some rust, and hangs slightly low as is common on VWs of this age.
•Rear of D/S rain channel has been damaged, has been straightened out and painted to stop it rusting, but needs more professional attention.
•In the same unknown incident as above front D/S arch trim was damaged.
•General parking dents, I have always parked as carefully as possible but has not been enough to avoid other idiots while unattended.
•Rear P/S door card is not fitted, I do have one, but it is a tricky fit, and it hasn’t bothered me that much.
•Windscreen is chipped in a couple of places, but will be including a new VW windscreen and rubber seal if wanted.
•Bumpers could fit better, this is common.

Does also have a few extra plus points, things replaced, etc, that don’t come under modifications:
•Long MOT so ready to drive away, valid till May 16.
•Recently replaced alternator, genuine Bosch, one of the last few left of a discontinued item.
•When alternator went, battery also went dead, so was replaced with an Excide Premium battery, must have no more than two years on it.
•Oil cooler was recently replaced, so has a good flow, car burns very little oil, to a point I don’t think I have ever topped up mid service period.
•Intercooler recently flushed by myself, and fins straightened, with this and oil cooler, the car maintains good temperature very easily.
•Wheel bearings all round have been replaced with less than 5000 miles on the oldest bearing.
•New Bosch wiper blades.
•Interior is in general good condition, I’m picky about interiors, and I’m happy with everything apart from doorcards.
•A common problem is corrosion in the battery tray, this was an issue when I bought it, but I had a new steel section welded in and painted.
•Underside was comprehensively under-sealed last year, including in the arches, and again no guarantee implied but hopefully this will hold up for a while longer.
•Rear brakes were recently completely rebuilt, with new drums, shoes, and cylinders.
•Supercharger was on the car when I bought it, but was swapped off and then back on, so has done less than 10k miles, plenty of miles left, but service interval would be at the buyers discretion.

Extra info from the first couple of years of my ownership can be found on the following page:
http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=237267&page=1

The car is located in Derby, questions and viewings very much welcome. Test driving at my discretion, but happy to take any passenger out for a proper demonstration of what the car offers.

The price is £3250 £2750 now just £2400 (in the interest of finding the car a proper home before winter and avoiding the costs of having two cars I have dropped the price accordingly), near offers taken but no daft offers from people who don’t know the car and think it should be dirt cheap because it’s old. Cash on collection or bank transfer provided you can wait till I can confirm that the funds have cleared.

No swaps or p/x as already have a replacement vehicle. MAY consider Honda Integra, Euro-R or very similar, even though tbh I really shouldn't, and doub't I'd be offered something like that anyway.  :)
