can't really tell anything from those pictures but it seem to have no G40 badges on it and I can't see a bee-sting aerial that a G40 should have.

What does the log-book say on it?

Few photos do show a roof aerial, but it could of been put on, it's not a hard job to do.. the fact it has half coloured bumpers and no black trims, archs, sill covers tells me works been done to it... weird it has that little arch slat on the back?

Do the G40 tailgates have 2 holes for the rear badge for the 'g40' bit?
Hard to prove otherwise though really.

Still not conclusive but you could always ask the previous owner(s)

I use an app called 'MyCarCheck' very handy for reg checking cars.
Your reg comes back as 'Volkswagen Polo Coupe G40' just as it should and is the same for every genuine G40 I've ever checked. It also confirms the engine size is 1272cc at 113bhp. So I would say you have a genuine G40.

It's a bit involved but I think originals have a square aerial hole on the roof.
This was pressed into the shell in the factory.

Aftermarket holes an therefore non genuine have a drilled round hole.

This is from a hazy memory from years back so don't take as gospel but another way to prove yours is original.

the previous owner and the one before him say its an original g40. People do take off the side trim etc because they prefer the look ? Have been told that if it says g40 on the log book then thats pretty conclusive?..
been told to check it has a bee sting ariel - which it does
also im checking this afternoon that it has holes in tailgate for the g40 badges

I'm sure all tailgates are the same.
I have a selection of badges from basic POLO, POLO_CL, POLO_GT and POLO_G40 and they all have 2 tabs on the back and all fit in the same holes. The only difference is in the location of the tabs on the badge itself.

Also have you checked the sticker in the boot if it's still there?
That should also state Coupe G40 on it, have the engine code down as PY and the gearbox code as ATV or CEK.

yeah if it says the model is a G40 on the log book then that's it.

Assuming it's not been reshelled and kept its number Plates? Naughty, but it happens.
Check the vin number against the V5

if it's been properly reshelled and the chassis number matches then it's still a g40.  But yes, if it's been put into another shell without being registered then it is a ringer and not road legal so I'd not touch it with a 100ft barge pole :D
