« on: December 24, 2008, 02:25:59 pm »
I need to replace the starter motor on my g40 and i was just wondering is the g40 starter motor g40 specific or is it the same on all the small block polo engines?

Cheers,

Juan

Thats a good point Juan.
Not so long ago me and DK Dan and PeteG40 scapped a Genisis G40 conversion
Mainly due to stress cracks.
I specifically remember removing the starter motor and thinking the shaft
could be fatter where it locates in the Bell housing of the Gearbox.
This is where i saw the what i`ll assume to be a Phosphur Bronze Bush
in the Bell housing that looked thinner wall thickness to the one i replaced
in my mk2 gearbox when i rebuilt the starter motor for that car.
At 1st i thought to myself, Ferk me, that bush looks worn but then glanced
at the end of the shaft of the starter motor and tho i didn`t measure it
with vernier callipers did look like it would of been a decent fit.
Nodoubt Pete, Yoof, or Hayesey will put us right.
I`m going upto where my engine/gearbox is shortly so i`m gonna take the
spare bronze bush i got for the mk2 with me to see if it fits on me G40 starter.
Someone will probably answer this quiery before i get back anyway.
Bloody hell, Pete beet me to it. lol.
all the same age are the same

haha!

I've always thought they were the same.  Looking in the parts catalog at http://www.vagcat.com, there are three different part codes for the full starter (inc solenoid etc...) but it doesn't say what's different about them and it doesn't list specific engine codes.

yup well said fred, it is true, they do differ in size

Yet i am still to come across one that is different, i got a replacement bush and it fit in the bell housing, but the starter didnt slot in the bush

I put it down to buying the wrong bush, but its worth double checking anyway

far too much talk of bush and slotting in this post

Yeah! Keep that starter motor Juan coz there easily rebuilt. Did mine for a lot less than the local Auto Electrical Factors charged for a overhaul rebuild. And i put a new Armateur in coz the old one had dead spots and if it happened to stop on one it wouldn`t work again.
