Wooly Handling
« on: May 13, 2014, 06:26:51 pm »
Hi all,
So over the years I never really got into changing suspension much on my old G40 as I was always happy with the general setup for the way I drove it on the roads and never really taking it on tracks etc.

But for this G I decided to get it sorted.
I noticed when I bought it that the handling was a little edgy, when hitting a corner hard it would feel like it was going to loose control before it should! and generally felt loose, so I decided I'd buy all new suspension with a set of coil overs and power flex bushes. So all installed and now taking it out (once the tracking was sorted) and it still feels edgy and well wooly! I did notice the top mounts had a little play in them but didn't think this could surely make the car feel this bad?

Very un nerving when driving along :-(

So it must be the top mounts as everything else is brand new! but my question is should I buy standard top mounts and if not what are my options?

Also out of interest I took the rear wheels off (standard G40 13") to find a 10mm spacer on both sides, is this something I missed? or have they just been left there from a previous set of wheels.
Sorry my last G40 was a converted saloon which handled completely different to the coupe.

Cheers
Paul

Is there play in the steering rack?
I think its adjustable which can make a huge difference?

What coilovers have you got? What are the spring rates on them?

Deffo worth checking all the basics first: top mounts, steering rack play, steering column pinch bolt, steering rack pinch bolt, rear axle bushes, wheel bearings all round, tyre pressures, track rod ends and lower ball joints. I'd also remove the rear spacers for definite.

Also worth checking that the front bumper iron and lower radiator support bar are properly bolted up to the chassis legs, there's a surprising number of cars now where these are loose and it means the front end can flex all over the place.

Out of interest, did you get geometry figures from the tracking place? They're useful to check that the rear axle is straight.

They are TA techniks coil overs,(I refuse to buy expensive stuff whilst its a daily driver this year), They are actually pretty good and the ride feels far better than the FK kit that was on it before.

Got all new wheel bearings fitted and all new bushes (apart from the G40 specialist ones as they seemed fine). Not checked the steering rack but it makes no noises or knocking which is why i thought maybe its the top mounts.

Will check if they gave me the figures for the tracking, he banged on about it being lowered so couldn't check everything so basically made sure the toe was correct! which was measured from the back wheels.

Will check the front end as suggested, didn't even think about that! also I still have that bar that goes between the antiroll bar mounts which I guess I can fit. Need a sub frame :-) just got to get over the recent spending spree!
