Crankshaft/flywheel bush

Was on vagcat and saw there is a little bush that lives at the flywheel end of the crankshaft - number 13

I don't remember ever seeing this before but I tried VW for one and they are obsolete.

Are they necessary?

Did a search and couldn't find anything...
